NFC East news: Jayden Daniels named the Commanders starting quarterback

The NFC East has two of the NFL’s top 10 teams, the Eagles and Cowboys, chasing Super Bowl dreams, but the division is always much more exciting when Washington has a talented and competitive roster.

After Daniel Jones sold the team to Sixers owner Josh Harris, the Commanders took steps towards changing the culture by hiring Dan Quinn as head coach and Adam Peters as GM and then overhauling the entire organization’s swagger by drafting former LSU star and Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels at No. 2 overall in April’s NFL draft.

Daniels has made some big plays this summer while showing poise and the insight to play the quarterback position as a dynamic dual-threat signal caller. He was rewarded on Monday afternoon when he was named the Week 1 starter against the Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield.

The 42-yard throw to Dyami Brown after Daniel changed the play because of the Jets’ coverage sealed the deal. According to Next Gen Stats, Daniels’ average time before throwing against the Dolphins was 2.02 seconds against Miami, meaning he’s reading the field and understanding coverage and where to go with the football.

In two preseason games thus far, Daniels completed 12 of 15 passes for 123 yards, with no touchdowns and a three-yard touchdown run.
