Next Tottenham manager: Former Liverpool star emerges as 'frontrunner' for the role

Bayern Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is the favourite to become the next Tottenham manager, according to reports in the Netherlands. The former Liverpool midfielder began his coaching career in 2019 with Real Sociedad B, the professional club where he started his senior playing career, before heading to Germany to become manager of Leverkusen last October.

Despite only being in the job for seven months, Alonso has already impressed with his free-flowing style of football, gaining significant interest from an outside perspective. So much so that, according to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Alonso is ahead of Feyenoord's Arne Slot in the running to take over at Spurs, with the Spaniard revealed as one of the top candidates.

Slot has been linked with vacancy at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with his team on the brink of winning the Eredivisie title, having lost just one game this season. At the moment, Ryan Mason is in interim charge of Spurs having replaced Cristian Stellini, who was placed in temporary charge following the exit of Antonio Conte in March.

Julian Nagelsmann has been the dominant name linked with the job, but any plans to appoint him suffered a setback, with one clear problem he has with the role being revealed on Tuesday.

A report from The Telegraph has outlined that Nagelsmann wants to know who will be leading recruitment and strategy after managing director Fabio Paratici resigned from his role in April following an unsuccessful appeal against a worldwide 30-month ban from football.

The report adds that the wage budget is a potential issue too, as Nagelsmann would be in the market for the higher earners who may be above Spurs’ expectations.

Vincent Kompany is also believed to be on the shortlist for Spurs following his promotion-winning season at Burnley. All four of those names are under 50, which hints at a significant shift away from older and more experienced managers with 53-year-old Antonio Conte and 60-year-old Jose Mourinho two of the last three permanent head coaches at the club.
