Detailed plans for the first 412 properties at the redevelopment of Bangour Village in West Lothian have just been granted planning permission by West Lothian Council.
The estate masterplan will have up to 998 new homes, including listed Victorian buildings that will be converted into energy efficient new homes, a new primary school, and a community retail hub, all set in 215 acres of mature woodland.
Detached, semi-detached and townhouses - plus 20% dedicated to affordable housing - will be developed, all with a shared district heating system.
Owners the Ambassador Group have promised to work alongside the local community and key stakeholders, while making a £150m into necessary infrastructure over the project's 10-year span, including constructing the new school that will use part of the site's original A-listed recreation hall.
Gordon Coster, managing director of Ambassador's developments division, said: "We are committed to honouring Bangour's legacy and working with the local community and stakeholders to create a sustainable future for this incredible location.
"We pride ourselves on being a good neighbour within the communities we build in.
"We have established a Community Liaison Group, which will work to keep open channels of communication between Ambassador, Bangour Village estate residents and the wider community. "
The estate has already been granted planning permission in principle for its overall masterplan, and initial infrastructure and groundworks have begun.
Ambassador will now continue to work through the detailed plans for each phase of the masterplan, with the first homes due to be released for sale this summer.
The 215-acre site near Dechmont was brought to market on behalf of NHS Lothian in 2017.
Bangour Village Hospital was built in the early 1900s as the Edinburgh District Asylum. The development was designed as a self-contained community supported by its own amenities which included a village shop, church and railway.
Bangour General Hospital opened on the site in 1918, but closed completely in 2004, with most of its functions moved to St John’s Hospital in Livingston when it opened in 1989.
