TAHIYRA is fancied to defend her unbeaten record with a victory in the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket on Sunday.
The daughter of Siyouni hinted at great things to come on her debut when scoring by five and a half lengths at Galway last July.
Trainer Dermot Weld elected to step Tahiyra up to the top level on her next start and the Aga Khan’s filly justified the move with a two-and-a-quarter-length humbling of Meditate in the Moyglare Stud Stakes in September. Weld warned Chris Hayes’ partner could bypass Newmarket in favour of the Irish version at the Curragh, but the fact he has chosen to send Tahiyra suggests she is ready to fire.
There was much to like about the way TRUST THE STARS landed her only outing at two last October — and Ralph Beckett’s filly can put down an Oaks marker by winning the Listed Howden Pretty Polly Stakes (2.25).
Last year’s Pretty Polly went to the Charlie Appleby-saddled WITH THE MOONLIGHT, and the daughter of Frankel has plenty going for her in the Group 2 Howden Dahlia Stakes (3.00). The Howden Handicap (1.50) looks wide open, but CEMHAAN captured the race last year and should give another good account of himself.
At Hamilton Park, ZIMMERMAN gets the nod for the 2.05, while PRINCE ALEX is the selection for Salisbury’s 2.40.
