SPEAR FIR can make the most of the step up to seven furlongs for a first career win in the Watch Racing TV Fillies’ Handicap (4.48) at Haydock Park.
The Simon Whitaker-trained filly qualified for a mark of 60 when she made her handicap debut over six furlongs at Thirsk four weeks ago.
And she came within three-quarters of a length of hitting the bullseye with a three-quarter-length second to Brazen Idol.
Third home Emerald Lady scored by six and a half lengths at Ffos Las five day later, and Spear Fir – for whom the chance to tackle seven furlongs looks a plus – has strong claims of going one better after a 1lb nudge up the weights.
After a winning all-weather debut at Chelmsford City last time, PEGGOTY is expected to take the beating in the eventmasters.co.uk Handicap (8.25).
Ed Walker’s daughter of Hot Streak, who had drawn a blank on turf in her first nine attempts, burst clear on the Essex Showground to beat La Equinata by three and a half lengths.
Under the circumstances, the British Horseracing Authority assessor’s reaction – a 5lb rise – could have been worse, and Peggoty has plenty more to offer on artificial surfaces.
