MODREENEY is fancied to atone for a last-flight departure at Taunton in December by landing the Best Odds Guaranteed At Vickers.Bet Everyday Novices’ Handicap Hurdle at Ffos Las (1.58).
A bumper winner at Ballinrobe in August 2021 when in the care of Denis Hogan, Modreeney drew a blank in his first five starts after crossing the Irish Sea to join Christian Williams.
But more was expected when the six-year-old returned from a 269-day lay-off – he had breathing surgery while on the sidelines – in Somerset 17 days before Christmas.
Sent off at 6-1 in a field of 14, Jack Tudor’s mount was throwing down a challenge to winner Force De Frap when coming down at the final obstacle.
The victor has gone in again since, and a 1lb nudge up the handicap should not prevent Modreeney from going one better.
At Huntingdon, SONIGINO has plenty going for him in the Winvic Construction Handicap Hurdle (4.10).
On his latest start, Paul Nicholls’ six-year-old finished eighth behind I Like To Move It in the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham in November.
But Sonigino had earlier been on an upward curve with a brace of wins at Chepstow in October and still has the potential to go forward.
