Newcastle warned about Jordan Henderson's rousing team talk as Liverpool 'standards dip'

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has warned Newcastle United that Liverpool will be up for the fight when they come to St. James' Park this weekend. The Reds bounced back to winning ways with a 2-0 win over Everton in the Merseyside derby on Monday night, with Jordan Henderson and James Milner among the senior Liverpool players to address 'standards slipping' at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp's side have been a far cry away from the team that went close to completing a remarkable quadruple last season. They're out of the Carabao Cup and have struggled in the Premier League this season, nine points behind the Magpies ahead of the trip to Tyneside.

However, Neville has warned the Magpies not to underestimate the influence of Jordan Henderson, despite a mixed bag of performances since the World Cup.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville said: "There’s been a lot of talk about how he’s not come out of the World Cup very well and I think that’s understandable. It’s a huge emotional rollercoaster in that World Cup and played a lot of football.

"But, what I would say about Liverpool and the reason I’ve gone easy on them over the last few weeks, is that over five years these players have built up so much credibility and I think trust in respect of how they performed. I’m not saying that they can dip to the standards that they have - they can’t.

"It’s obviously quite unacceptable to themselves, let alone what we’re watching - but the reality is they will come again this season and they will go on a run again if they can get the players into their team. Henderson’s a massive player for them.

"They’ve got big personalities and characters, they were obviously having a pop at each other this week. They said that Henderson spoke out in the dressing room, Milner spoke out in the dressing room, they’re just not going to accept this and lie down and finish 10th easily,

"They’re going to fight for every point until the end of the season, and they can go on a big run - they’ve proven that before."
