Newcastle vs Manchester United LIVE
A full slate of midweek Premier League action continued on Wednesday night as Eddie Howe’s 10-man Magpies ended Michael Carrick’s unbeaten start to life as interim Red Devils boss.
The form of these two clubs could hardly have been more different since Carrick took charge, with United winning six of seven league games and injury-hit Newcastle winning just once in the same period. And while Jacob Ramsey’s dismissal for a second bookable offence in first-half stoppage time threatened to make it a long night for the hosts, it was mere minutes later that Anthony Gordon won and converted a penalty to give Howe’s side the lead.
Bruno Fernandes, who gave away the spot-kick, then delivered a free-kick that was nodded in by Casemiro just before the interval and United’s skipper remained a creative threat throughout, with Aaron Ramsdale forced into several fine saves. The visitors piled on the pressure as the second half ticked on but were ultimately undone by a superb curling finish from substitute William Osula following a fast break. Relive the action as it happened below with our dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis.

Report: 10-man Magpies end Michael Carrick's unbeaten run
22:45 , Alex DakersWill Osula came off the bench to blast 10-man Newcastle to a dramatic 2-1 victory over Manchester United as Michael Carrick suffered defeat for the first time in his interim reign.
The 22-year-old Dane struck in spectacular style in the 90th minute of a pulsating encounter to end both Carrick’s unbeaten run and the Magpies’ streak of three successive Premier League defeats in style.
Thirty years to the day since Eric Cantona famously fired United to a 1-0 win over Kevin Keegan’s Magpies at St James’ Park which proved a decisive blow in the race for the title, the sides served up a pulsating contest which remained in the balance until the final whistle.

Newcastle reaction: 'The best feeling ever'
22:24 , Alex Dakers“That was the best feeling ever,” said winning goal-scorer William Osula, admitting he practiced cutting in and finishing in training yesterday.
“I was so happy for that. When I came on I just prayed that I was going to score and make something happen and thank God that that happened.”
“I did a knee-slide on my own over there,” said goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who pulled off several big save throughout the evening to keep Newcastle in it despite the Magpies playing with 10 men for the entire second half.

GOAL! Newcastle 2-1 Man Utd
22:10 , Alex Dakers90mins: THE 10-MAN MAGPIES LEAD AGAIN!
Newcastle break after those several minutes of pressure, and it’s substitute William Osula who gathers on the right touchline, cuts back in to the box and curls the ball past Senne Lammens.
That was a sensational strike, and a lovely pass forward to the striker from Kieran Trippier as well.
Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
22:09 , Alex Dakers89mins: Boosted by fresh legs, the Red Devils pile pressure on their hosts and this time it’s Joshua Zirkzee who fires a looping shot towards goal that Aaron Ramsdale must make a strong one-handed save to stop.
Corner to United, but it comes to nothing.

22:06 , Alex Dakers85mins: Two more Newcastle changes now, as Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga go off for William Osula and Jacob Murphy.
For United, Noussair Mazraoui - who looks to have picked up an injury of sorts and has been limping for the last few minutes - is replaced by forgotten man Tyrell Malacia.
Nothing comes of Newcastle’s corner, meanwhile.
Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd

Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
22:02 , Alex Dakers82mins: We’re well into the final 10 minutes of regulation time here at St James’ Park. Will we get a winner?
A reminder that by this point in the first half, we’d had - by my memory - just one shot on target.
In the stoppage time that followed, there was a red card and two goals.
Anything is possible in football!
Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
22:00 , Alex Dakers79mins: Senne Lammens punches the delivery away under pressure.

United try to break through Mateus Cunha, who is hauled down by Kieran Trippier and the Newcastle full-back has his name taken by the referee.

Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
21:53 , Alex Dakers73mins: United can’t get a clean shot away in the box but they come again, only for a teasing delivery from the outside of the right boot of Bruno Fernandes to go just too far in front of Benjamin Sesko.
Fan reaction: Amad time?
21:51 , Alex DakersUnited need more pace in their attack. It’s all too slow and pedestrian.

Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
21:49 , Alex Dakers68mins: Mateus Cunha somewhat carelessly swings an arm behind him and catches Kieran Trippier, giving away a foul near the Newcastle touchline in the process.

Aaron Ramsdale boots this one upfield.
Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
21:47 , Alex Dakers66mins: Brilliant play from Newcastle nearly earns them a go-ahead goal.
The Magpies rush to the front post en masse, taking United’s defence with them - and Anthony Gordon is free to charge towards the back post, where the ball arrives but his first-time effort goes wide.

Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
21:45 , Alex Dakers65mins: Sandro Tonali delivers from the resulting free-kick on the right of the box, but the ball somehow goes all the way through the area.
Newcastle players are claiming a handball, which has been checked and cleared.
Corner to the hosts instead.

Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
21:41 , Alex Dakers61mins: United goal-scorer Casemiro is replaced and so too is Luke Shaw, with Ugarte and Dalot coming on.
Mazraoui switches to left-back with Dalot on the right now, and it’s a like-for-like swap in the middle of the park with the other change.
Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
21:40 , Alex Dakers60mins: Mbeumo’s first effort after being picked out by Bruno Fernandes following a great run is blocked, and his second goes out of play.
Fan reaction: United subs needed

Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
21:38 , Alex Dakers57mins: Mainoo scrambles back to recover for United and concedes a corner as Willock attempts a cross from the right.
Newcastle have had more than double their visitors’ possession in the opening 10-odd minutes of this half.

Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
21:36 , Alex Dakers56mins: So far in this second half, you can’t really tell that Newcastle are playing with 10 men...
Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
21:35 , Alex Dakers55mins: Kieran Trippier takes the free-kick from deep, but the referee almost instantly blows his whistle for a foul on Harry Maguire from Dan Burn.
Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
21:34 , Alex Dakers54mins: United play out from the back but not for long, as Anthony Elanga wins the ball from Luke Shaw.
Joelinton is then fouled by Casemiro.
Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
21:33 , Alex Dakers53mins: Anthony Gordon tries to test Senne Lammens from outside the area, but it’s a comfortable stop for the United goalie.
Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
21:32 , Alex Dakers51mins: A quieter start to this second half than how the first period ended!
As things stand, United remain third and take a one-point lead over Aston Villa, who suffered a dismal 4-1 defeat at home to Chelsea tonight.
Back underway
21:26 , Alex Dakers46mins: The second half begins now.
Eddie Howe bolsters his midfielder after that slightly harsh Jacob Ramsey red card in first-half stoppage time by replacing Harvey Barnes with Joe Willock.
Bruno's assist tally
21:20 , Alex DakersThat’s Premier League assist number 14 of the season for Bruno Fernandes.
He’s one shy of Manchester United’s single-season club record, and six shy of the all-time league record with nine-and-a-half games to go.
HT: Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
21:11 , Alex DakersTime for a break - back shortly!
GOAL! Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
21:09 , Alex Dakers45+9mins: What is happening?!
Bruno Fernandes makes amends for giving away that penalty, whipping in a delivery that Casemiro nods in past Aaron Ramsdale.

Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd
21:08 , Alex Dakers45+8mins: We’re STILL playing at St James’, despite only being allotted three minutes of added time.
We’ve had a red card, a penalty and a few other fouls since then, to be fair.
United have a free-kick on the right wing.
GOAL! Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd
21:05 , Alex Dakers45+5mins: Anthony Gordon sends it straight down the middle as Senne Lammens dives to his left, and 10-man Newcastle lead at St James’ Park!

PENALTY! Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
21:04 , Alex Dakers45+4mins: Oh, hello!
Bruno Fernandes catches the leg of Anthony Gordon just as the Newcastle forward darts into the box, and the referee awards the Magpies a penalty.
VAR confirms it.

RED CARD! Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
21:02 , Alex Dakers45+1mins: Senne Lammens dashes out to stop Jacob Ramsey, but the officials say no penalty.

In fact, the referee has shown Ramsey a second yellow card, for simulation!

Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
21:00 , Alex Dakers45mins: Bryan Mbeumo gives away two more fouls on Lewis Hall in quick succession - he’s already been booked, and will have to be careful.
The United man then sees the ball fall to him inside the area after Ramsdale parries an effort from Mateus Cunha, but he can’t keep his effort down.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:57 , Alex Dakers42mins: A shot on target to report!
It’s Kobbie Mainoo that’s responsible, connecting well from distance and forcing a leaping save from Aaron Ramsdale.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:57 , Alex Dakers#NEWMUN This game is already getting a bit ugly and a red card is certainly looming with all these yellow cards, but for who.

Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:56 , Alex Dakers41mins: Elanga drives forward and gets a cross in, which Harvey Barnes tries to reach but it ends up in the gloves of Senne Lammens.
Had Barnes left it, Dan Burn was waiting behind him...
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:55 , Alex Dakers39mins: Bookings all around, with Luke Shaw the latest man to have his name taken for a foul.
Moments earlier, Dan Burn barged Benjamin Sesko off the ball on the edge of the area but there’s not enough in that for play to be stopped.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:54 , Alex Dakers38mins: Senne Lammens leaps high to claim a cross and goes long out from the back.
Newcastle win it back momentarily but then give away a foul, with Joelinton booked for daftly wrapping his arms around countryman Mateus Cunha.
The Magpies midfielder sarcastically applauds the referee afterwards.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:52 , Alex Dakers37mins: Bryan Mbeumo earns himself a yellow card for a late challenge on Lewis Hall.
Fan reaction: Newcastle to rue missed chances?

Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:50 , Alex Dakers34mins: Bruno Fernandes lifts a delivery into the box but Thiaw heads it away and Newcastle break at pace.
The ball ends up with Joelinton on the edge of the area, but the Brazilian shoots far too high.
Anthony Gordon had darted up to his left and was perhaps a better option, there.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:48 , Alex Dakers33mins: Malick Thiaw goes through the back of Mateus Cunha and isn’t booked, but is penalised.
Free-kick to United some 30 yards or so from goal.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:47 , Alex Dakers32mins: The pressure on United’s backline has eased in the last 10 minutes or so, but they’re yet to have a proper clear cut chance of their own.
Neither team, in fact, has had a shot on target.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:44 , Alex Dakers28mins: Bruno Fernandes sends that one in, but Newcastle clear at the near post.
Meanwhile, we’ve been catching glimpses of a shining black eye that Casemiro is sporting.

Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:43 , Alex Dakers27mins: It’s whipped in by Bryan Mbeumo and comes off the back of Kieran Trippier’s head for another corner.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:42 , Alex Dakers27mins: A corner to United now; Dan Burn thought he had kept the ball in play, but the officials disagree.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:41 , Alex Dakers26mins: The first booking of the evening is for Jacob Ramsey, who pulls back Casemiro near the halfway line.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:40 , Alex Dakers24mins: The whistle eventually goes for a foul against Benjamin Sesko, but the United man made a real nuisance of himself there with a couple of scuffed efforts.
He’s a big presence, the young striker, and Newcastle will have their hands full with him if his teammates can supply him with chances.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:39 , Alex Dakers23mins: Newcastle have two men down, Kieran Trippier and Malick Thiaw.

Cunha’s boot accidentally caught Trippier in the face as he leapt for a high ball, and I didn’t catch what happened to Thiaw but both men are fine to carry on.

Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:37 , Alex Dakers21mins: A needless shove from Bryan Mbeumo on Lewis Hall as the ball goes out for a throw-in.
Newcastle take possession again, but their attack ends in Senne Lammens rushing out to gather.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:35 , Alex Dakers20mins: Newcastle are peppering United’s box with shots, but this one is off the mark again.
It’s Sandro Tonali who lets loose from outside the area, missing wide to the left.
Fan reaction: United start slow

Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:33 , Alex Dakers19mins: It looks like Luke Shaw took an elbow to the face from big Dan Burn when that free-kick was delivered a moment ago.
He goes down, the United man, but is back on his feet now and we play on.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:33 , Alex Dakers18mins: The Red Devils have struggled to gain a foothold in this game so far, with momentum very much with the hosts.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:32 , Alex Dakers17mins: Free-kick to Newcastle near the halfway line, won smartly by Anthony Gordon off Harry Maguire.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:29 , Alex Dakers14mins: Newcastle’s next foray forward sees Joelinton win possession in United’s box, Anthony Gordon flick it back to Harvey Barnes, who curls just wide of the same post.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:28 , Alex Dakers13mins: Former United man Anthony Elanga watches the ball drop onto his boot, but his volley flashes wide of Senne Lammens’ righthand post and into the side netting.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:26 , Alex Dakers11min: United’s turn for a free-kick now, won by Kobbie Mainoo.
A promising delivery from Mateus Cunha flashes past Benjamin Sesko in the box, but Newcastle clear.

Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:25 , Alex Dakers9mins: A nice exchange between Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga sees the former have a shot blocked in the area, before the latter gives away a foul on Noussair Mazraoui and United have the ball back.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:22 , Alex Dakers7mins: United venture forward now as Benjamin Sesko flicks behind him for Bruno Fernandes, who tees up Mateus Cunha.
It’s a poor effort from the Brazilian though, flying well over the crossbar from just outside the box.
OFF THE POST! Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:19 , Alex Dakers4mins: As I say that, Kieran Trippier lifts what looks to be a cross into the six yard box from the right and it clips the post before bouncing past Leny Yoro.
Lewis Hall went for the follow-up, but no luck this time for the Newcastle left-back as the ball sails high.
Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd
20:18 , Alex Dakers3mins: Newcastle start on the front foot but are unable to find an opening in Manchester United’s backline yet.

Sesko scoring for fun
20:08 , Alex DakersBenjamin Sesko is making just his second start under Michael Carrick, but tonight he could score his seventh goal in eight games.
Plenty of those have been match-winners. Will he manage another today?
We’ll find out very soon - kick-off is moments away!

10 to go
20:06 , Alex DakersOnly 10 minutes until kick-off at St James’ Park.
Lammens in strong form
20:02 , Alex DakersSenne Lammens has been a breath of fresh air for United between the posts lately, and has even drawn comparisons with a club legend thanks to an increasingly solid debut campaign in the Premier League.
Will he shut Newcastle out tonight?

Regardless, his current indisputed hold on the No1 jersey is in stark contrast to the goalkeeping situation in the Magpies’ squad, with Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale - the latter starting tonight - both unable to nail down a sure-fire starting spot under Eddie Howe this term.

United’s skipper has set up 13 Premier League goals already in 2025/26, the most of any player in the top flight.
With two more he’ll equal the single-season record for the Red Devils, and with seven more - across his 10 remaining matches - he would equal the single-season record for the entire division.

Fan thoughts: Pope dropped, Gordon up top
19:26 , Alex DakersAmong the home fans, meanwhile, there seems to be some support of Eddie Howe’s decision to bench Nick Pope - who had a poor game, not for the first time this season, against Everton last time out - in favour of Aaron Ramsdale.

Anthony Gordon, meanwhile, has struggled for output in the Premier League for a while now, despite his prolific season in the Champions League, yet is named up front for Newcastle with Yoane Wissa left on the bench.

Team news reaction
19:17 , Alex DakersThat’s two changes for Newcastle from Sunday’s 3-2 home defeat against Everton, then.
Nick Pope drops out, replaced in goal by Aaron Ramsdale, while Harvey Barnes fills in for club-record signing Nick Woltemade, who is ruled out through illness.
Anthony Gordon - the Magpies’ leading Champions League goal-scorer - appears to be the likeliest man to lead the line, given natural frontman Yoane Wissa is on the bench.
Newcastle XI: Ramsdale; Trippier, Thiaw, Burn, Hall; Ramsey, Tonali, Joelinton; Elanga, Gordon, Barnes
As for United, there’s just one change from the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.
It sees Diogo Dalot replaced at right-back by Noussair Mazraoui, who makes his first start since December.
Veteran backlinesmen Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire are fit despite questions marks over their availability, while 18-year-old defender Godwill Kukonki makes the bench and Benjamin Sesko remains in the starting line-up, as expected.
Man Utd XI: Lammens; Mazraoui, Yoro, Maguire, Shaw; Casemiro, Mainoo; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Cunha; Sesko
