Newcastle vs Chelsea LIVE: Latest result and reaction as hosts reach Carabao Cup quarter-finals

Newcastle United struck twice in three first-half minutes to beat Chelsea and advance to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. This was the second meeting between the clubs in just a few days and the hosts gained a measure of revenge for their Premier League defeat.

While visiting boss Enzo Maresca opted for heavy rotation, Eddie Howe named a strong Newcastle side, and was rewarded with a strong performance. Alexander Isak first capitalised on an error in possession from Chelsea deep in their own half, before Axel Disasi clumsily turned through his own net after his teammates fell asleep to let Isak latch on to a quickly-taken free kick.

It continues Newcastle’s pursuit of their first major domestic silverware since 1955, while Maresca’s alternative goals were perhaps illustrated by his decision to use just a single substitution, with Cole Palmer among those left on the bench. The host go into the hat for the quarter-finals.

Two goals in quick succession were enough, then, for Newcastle to keep up their pursuit of long-awaited silverware, the hosts just about deserved winners on balance with Nick Pope and Lloyd Kelly doing enough to keep Chelsea at bay. Into the quarter-final hat they go - the draw will be made a little later at the conclusion of Tottenham vs Manchester City.

The first minutes of the season for young Lewis Miley, back from injury and replacing Sandro Tonali in the Newcastle midfield.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 90 minutes

An ambitious effort from all of 30 yards from Renato Veiga bounces awkwardly in front of Nick Pope, but his two palms are securely in place.

Three additional minutes to be played.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 88 minutes

21:32 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A Chelsea cross from each side has the same issue: too much depth. Marc Cucurella does manage to get his head to the second delivery but can’t do much with it, the ball lobbing behind for a goal kick as Newcastle close in on victory.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 86 minutes

That’s twice now that Newcastle have hit the upright in this encounter after Joelinton’s early effort just evaded Jorgensen’s goal.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 83 minutes

Against the post and away! Brilliant play from Newcastle, and a glimpse of William Osula’s talent, the young forward getting the ball out of his feet with a delicate flick and then rifling a left-footed shot against the woodwork.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 81 minutes

21:25 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The first of this evening’s ties is done and dusted, with Liverpool through to the quarter-finals at the expense of Brighton.

Enzo Fernandes takes an arm to the face from Bruno Guimaraes, though referee Chris Kavanagh is happy there is no foul.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 79 minutes

Still no sign just yet of further activity on the Chelsea bench. Is it Cole Palmer time for Enzo Maresca, or is he prepared to totally rest him?

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 76 minutes

Tino Livramento is on against his former club, offering extra defensive cover down the right with Anthony Gordon off as Eddie Howe tries to see the win out.

Offside! Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 74 minutes

21:18 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Newcastle think they have their third but the offside flag is up! A free kick floats all the way through to the far post and Sean Longstaff provides the finishing touches as it is headed back across goal, but the assistant cuts their celebrations short. Remember, there’s no VAR tonight, though it did look like Newcastle’s attackers had gone too soon.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 72 minutes

21:16 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Lloyd Kelly has had a really solid night in Newcastle’s defence. He shows off impressive pace to get back to Joao Felix, and then his strength to keep the Portuguese forward off the ball and force a foul.

Dan Burn replaces Lewis Hall and appears to have assumed Kelly’s place alongside Fabian Schar, leaving the former Bournemouth defender to push out to left-back.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 70 minutes

21:14 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Chelsea have just lost a bit of intensity after that period of pressure. 20 minutes left for the visitors to find a route back into the contest.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 67 minutes

Nick Pope hasn’t always looked totally secure from crosses into the box tonight but he is in total control of the latest corner.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 65 minutes

21:08 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Clear attempts to force the pace from Chelsea now. Mykhailo Mudryk is still down and being attended to by substitute Ben Chilwell as his teammates take a quick free kick, drawing the first of three corners in quick succession.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 63 minutes

21:07 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Alterations from Newcastle, with Joe Willock and Alexander Isak taking leave. Bruno Guimaraes and William Osula are on.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 61 minutes

21:05 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Noni Madueke’s next delivery lands on Nick Pope, who punches away.

Madueke is soon back on the ball and appealing for a spot kick, showing his burst as he gets beyond Anthony Gordon but soft in then falling to the floor.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 59 minutes

21:03 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Fabian Schar makes a strong tackle on Christopher Nkunku, picking his moment to slide on the ball and avoid conceding a penalty. Alexander Isak slightly awkwardly turns the resultant corner behind for another set piece.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 58 minutes

A first change from Chelsea as Noni Madueke replaces Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 55 minutes

20:59 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A bit of pressure builds on the hosts and the visiting fans lift the noise. Nick Pope’s punch falls at the feet of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Lewis Hall has to hurry to block with his goalkeeper out of action. Pope is back on his feet to prevent a corner and, at the cost of a yellow card, the taking of a quick throw-in having been left stranded far from goal.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 52 minutes

20:55 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A bit of argy-bargy as the Chelsea players ire after a pretty poor challenge from Anthony Gordon. The forward had lost control of the ball and rather cleaned out Marc Cucurella, who is backed up by his teammates. Joelinton takes three of them on before re-assessing the odds as referee Chris Kavanagh calms affairs with a quiet word or two.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 50 minutes

20:53 , Harry Latham-Coyle

This is a corking contest. Lloyd Kelly makes a last-ditch block as Christopher Nkunku fires from the penalty spot, and Newcastle counter with pace and intent. Lewis Hall tests Filip Jorgensen with a skidding shot that the Chelsea goalkeeper is equal to.

(Getty Images)

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 48 minutes

20:52 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Bold! Filip Jorgensen’s footwork has been as clumsy as a Strictly contestant bound for an early exit tonight, but that’s rather fancier, spinning on a sixpence away from Anthony Gordon with a delicate Cruyff turn.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 47 minutes

20:50 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Fabian Schar advances and advances, happy to eat up the space on offer through the heart of the Chelsea midfield. Having reached a promising area, the centre back should do much better with his eventual pass, under-weighting it to Anthony Gordon and affording Marc Cucurella a chance to cut it out.

Second half...

Back underway at St James’ Park.

HT: Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea

20:36 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A lively Wednesday night in the Toon and one that the home fans are rather enjoying. There have been chances aplenty at both ends but it is the hosts in control thanks to two goals in quick succession, Alexander Isak pouncing on a Chelsea error before Axel Disasi turned into his own net. Still plenty of time for Enzo Maresca’s men to instigate a turnaround, and Joao Felix is looking bright, but Eddie Howe went down the tunnel with a smile after his side found some long-awaited attacking fluency.

HALF TIME: Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea

20:33 , Harry Latham-Coyle
(AFP via Getty Images)

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 45 + 1 minutes

20:33 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Newcastle have the half’s last chance. Anthony Gordon racing away from Benoit Badiashile but putting too much mustard on his cross. Joe Willock manages to get a leg on it but has little hope of controlling his finish, which ends up in the rafters.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 44 minutes

20:31 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Sean Longstaff backtracks well to cut out an Axel Disasi pass bound for Christopher Nkunku. The midfielder then cannily uses Disasi’s toe to convert a corner into a goal kick.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 42 minutes

20:28 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And again Pope has to be swift in getting down to a Joao Felix drag towards the far corner. It’s good glovework from the England goalkeeper to hold it, too, with Christopher Nkunku waiting to pounce.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 39 minutes

20:25 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Joao Felix looks Chelsea’s likeliest route back into the game. He draws a sharp stop from Nick Pope with a sternly-struck shot.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 38 minutes

20:24 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Filip Jorgensen is all over the place in possession. He passes almost straight to a pressing Sandro Tonali on the edge of the Chelsea box. His defence just about regathers itself to ensure their goalkeeper’s latest error goes unpunished. This has been a mightily shaky start from the summer signing.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 36 minutes

20:22 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Renato Veiga shows some of Chelsea’s frustration, barging into Alexander Isak a second or so after the striker had completed his pass. Up lumber the Newcastle centre-halves.

Lewis Hall whips the free kick to the far post, but it’s too deep, taking a hop off the bleached head of Joelinton and out of play on the far side.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 34 minutes

20:20 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A superb block! Lloyd Kelly is there in the nick of time to deny Joao Felix after the rest of the Newcastle defensive unit lose track of the Portuguese.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 32 minutes

20:18 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The chances continue to come. Joe Willock drags a shot wide from 20 yards, an apparent deflection unspotted by the officials.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 30 minutes

20:16 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Chelsea are rattled. Christopher Nkunku very nearly makes the same mistake from the next free kick, showing his recovery speed to scramble back in time having let Alexander Isak escape once more.

GOAL! NEWCASTLE 2-0 Chelsea (Axel Disasi own goal, 26 minutes)

20:12 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It’s two!

Another soft, soft goal for Chelsea to concede in a nightmare three minutes! First, they leave Alexander Isak all alone from a free kick, switching off and allowing the striker to saunter down the left. His deflected cross should still be dealt with, but Joe Willock gets his head to it and Axel Disasi can’t sort his feet out, turning into his own net.

(AFP via Getty Images)

GOAL! NEWCASTLE 1-0 Chelsea (Alexander Isak, 23 minutes)

20:09 , Harry Latham-Coyle

For a second time in four days, Alexander Isak scores against Chelsea!

It’s a horrible moment for the visitors. They pop the ball around on the edge of the area without due care and attention, Renato Veiga given a hospital pass. Joelinton hurries him and sends the ball spinning free, allowing Sandro Tonali to slide in and set up his Swedish striker. Isak finds the bottom corner with typical aplomb.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea, 21 minutes

20:07 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Vibrant play from Joao Felix, chopping in and then out to bamboozle a pair of retreating defenders and eventually thrash a shot between them. There’s too much oomph in the effort but Felix’s flashing feet look in good working order.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea, 19 minutes

20:06 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And now Sean Longstaff follows Schar in having his name scribbled down, out of control as he clatters Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. The midfielder is 27 today - not the card he’d have wanted to have received.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea, 16 minutes

20:02 , Harry Latham-Coyle

There’s a good battle brewing between Joelinton and Axel Disasi on that side, two tall and powerful individuals having a couple of early entertaining duels.

At the other end, Fabian Schar is slightly late on a rampaging Christopher Nkunku as the Chelsea forward makes rapid advancement down the right. Into the book the Newcastle captain goes.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea, 12 minutes

19:58 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It looks like Joao Felix is playing as Chelsea’s number ten just in behind Christopher Nkunku, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Mudryk offering the width on either side. Joelinton is in Newcastle’s front three rather than the midfield role in which we’ve more commonly seen him in the last couple of seasons.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea, 10 minutes

19:56 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Enzo Fernandez’s attempt to switch play goes awry, the lofted pass misplaced and misjudged and leaving Mykhailo Mudryk with much too much to do.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea, 8 minutes

19:54 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Almost an opener! Renato Veiga arrives on to Marc Cucurella’s beautiful cut-back, and only Sandro Tonali’s jutting leg prevents the Chelsea midfielder from finding the net. Even with the flick of the Italian’s leg, it’s not far wide with Nick Pope well beaten.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea, 7 minutes

19:53 , Harry Latham-Coyle

More authoritative from Jorgensen, making a strong decision to come out and deny Anthony Gordon a chance to use his pace to get to a lump over the top.

Mykhailo Mudryk gives the ball away softly in his first moment of possession of the match.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea, 5 minutes

19:51 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A slightly nervy moment for Filip Jorgensen, the Chelsea goalkeeper coming a long way to try and claim Lewis Hall’s outswinging free kick and failing to collect cleanly. Joelinton can’t quite stab the loose ball goalwards.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea, 3 minutes

19:49 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Off the woodwork! Joelinton wraps himself around the post in disbelief having thundered into the box to get on the end of a lovely low cross from Alexander Isak and seemingly provided the scoring touch. But his side footed effort clips the outside of the upright!

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea, 2 minutes

19:48 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The first chance, though, falls to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, slipped in by Christopher Nkunku but unable to direct his shot wide of Nick Pope, who gathers between his legs. An excellent early sighting for the former Leicester man.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea, 1 minute

19:47 , Harry Latham-Coyle

An early look at Anthony Gordon’s fitness, with the forward looking sharp as he sprints across to slide the ball out of play from the feet of Benoit Badiashile.

The strength of that Newcastle side suggests that Eddie Howe is well aware just how positive a deep cup run could be this season. Their league campaign has rather stalled in recent weeks and silverware has been a stated goal of the club since their Saudi Arabian takeover - 1955 was the last time they secured a major domestic trophy.

Jadon Sancho, by the way, misses out on the Chelsea squad tonight due to illness. A shame for the winger having shown glimpses of his best as he attempts to rebuild his career in England after a difficult time at Manchester United.

It could be another significant night for Mykhailo Mudryk, though, as he tries to press his case to Enzo Maresca:

Newcastle and Chelsea’s routes to round four

Chelsea’s participation in European competition meant a late entry into this year’s Carabao Cup, and Enzo Maresca’s side have reached this stage courtesy of a 5-0 thrashing of Barrow in their sole fixture. Newcastle, by contrast, required penalties to knock out Nottingham Forest in the last round having secured a narrow win over Wimbledon earlier in the campaign.

Eddie Howe hoping to put ‘difficult phase’ behind Newcastle

19:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Eddie Howe admitted his Newcastle side are in a “difficult phase” after the weekend league defeat to Chelsea, but insists morale remains strong within his squad.

Howe’s side have slipped into the bottom half and are without a win in five league games.

The Newcastle manager told Sky Sports after the 2-1 loss: “I thought it was a really high level game. I thought it was two really good teams. I thought it was a brave performance by us but the game was decided by a couple of moments.

“We were disappointed with the second goal. We gave the ball away, it cost us with the goal. It is an uncharacteristic goal for us to concede. I am proud of what the players gave today, if we continue to play as we are then the results will come.

“The attitude of the players is very good. We dug deep. We scored a really good goal and proved that we are that attacking force we can be. Sometimes you go through phases like this, we are going through a difficult phase in terms of results.”

As expected, Enzo Maresca has rung the changes for Chelsea as a number of fringe figures get opportunities to push their case for greater Premier League involvement

Enzo Maresca praises ‘beautiful’ culture of English football after wild weekend

18:31 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has praised a “beautiful” culture of English football for breeding drama that makes it the envy of the rest of Europe.

Five of the 10 Premier League games played over the weekend saw the result change in stoppage time, with Brentford’s 4-3 win over Ipswich on Saturday and Manchester United’s late 2-1 defeat to West Ham the pick of them.

Wolves fought back to draw 2-2 with Brighton despite falling two goals behind as late as the 85th minute, while Everton and Bournemouth each snatched a point at the death in their games against Fulham and Aston Villa.

Maresca - who was spared a nail-biting climax in his team’s 2-1 win against Newcastle - suggested supporters in England do not realise how lucky they are.

“It’s the reason why people are so in love with the Premier League,” the Italian said. “You’re from England, you don’t realise how the Premier League is (viewed) abroad.

“One of the reasons why is that the game is never finished here. In different countries, my country for instance, if you’re 2-0 up last five minutes, you can have five or six players that fall down for 20 seconds, half an hour. It’s difficult to come back.

“In England it’s a different culture. It’s probably the reason why it’s so beautiful.”

Enzo Maresca relishing potential reunion with Ruud van Nistelrooy this weekend

18:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca said the sacking of Erik ten Hag has forced him to re-think preparations for Sunday’s trip to Manchester United.

The game at Old Trafford will be United’s first in the Premier League since a poor start to the season prompted them to dismiss their manager of nearly two and a half years, with assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy placed in interim charge.

Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim has been heavily linked with the role, but should an appointment not have been made by the weekend it will mean a reunion in the dugout for Maresca and former United striker Van Nistelrooy, who played together for a year at Malaga between 2011 and 2012.

It has also meant extra homework for the Blues boss, who has had to dig out videos of the stand-in manager’s former club PSV Eindhoven.

“I guess it will be Ruud (in charge),” said Maresca. “He’s a friend of mine, we played together, we spent a year together at Malaga and we still have a relationship.

“We started to watch some PSV games. We’d already watched many Man United games. I’m sad for Erik and in the same time happy for Ruud. Hopefully I can see him Sunday.”

Eddie Howe: Anthony Gordon could return from injury

17:45 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe revealed that Anthony Gordon may have a chance of featuring against Chelsea in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash.

The sides meet for the second time in four days having faced each other in the Premier League on Sunday, when the Blues emerged victors with a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge.

Gordon was not named in the squad at the weekend due to a groin problem, but Howe stressed that the “right decision” will be made about whether the winger can be involved at St James’ Park.

Howe said: “He has been for a scan, we’re hopeful the injury isn’t serious, we didn’t think it was when he initially did it. Let’s see how he is today.

“It was in training, I think it was Friday, but it didn’t become necessarily obvious to us until Saturday.

“Nothing serious, it’s one of those things you get from time to time that players can play with or not play with. He felt it was too much for him on Sunday to play.

“There is (a chance he could feature) but we have to make the right decision, we have Arsenal coming up very quickly. It’s about making sure we do no further damage to him.”
