Match report: Newcastle 4-3 West Ham
Premier League: Harvey Barnes scored two late goals in a brief substitutes’ cameo during a seven-goal thriller, turning a game that West Ham had led 3-1 on its head – not to mention damaging the visitors’ own European ambitions and the job security of their manager, David Moyes.
David Moyes: “We were playing against a good Newcastle team who have a lot of good attacking players and that showed in the second half,” says David Moyes in an interview with TNT, upon being asked how his side lost that game.
“We have a lot of good attacking players to but when it came to the defending, things fell apart a little bit. Both teams mighht say that but certainly we fell apart more than they did.”
On the second penalty: “I think the boy [Anthony Gordon] kicked Kalvin Phillips if you want to llok at it that way. He put his foot in front of Kalvin’s and stopped him kicking the ball. I don’t see how that’s really a penalty kick but there you go, it was given. It was very similar to the first one in some ways. Those were close decisions, tough decisions that didn’t fall in our favour. I think the referee played a huge part in today’s result, I really do.”
Eddie Howe: “I don’t think you want to know what was going through my head at that time,” says the Newcastle manager when asked how he felt when Jamaal Lascelles was forced off with a knee injury.
“These injuries mean we’re not able to express ourselves in the way we know we can. Just when we feel like we’re getting players back, we’re losing more and again, today, the injuries we’ve suffered have been fairly inoccuous. It’s a real test for the group but the group gets stronger because of it.”
Harvey Barnes: “With the way the game was going, the second goal there was a bit of controversy, but we have always had that team spirit and today is one of those days we’ll remember for a long time,” says the substitute whose two late goals won he game for Newcastle.
“It has been a tough season for me and I have missed that feeling so much. My playing time has been limited so every time I am on the pitch I went to help the team. The atmosphere here at St James’ Park is always amazing. Today it is a win and it is a great feeling.”
On Newcastle’s injury issues: “Today I was fully fit but there have been large parts of the season when myself and others have missed because of injuries,” he says. “It has been frustrating. I miss that feeling of being out there and when I am, I want to make up for lost time and today was a great step forward with that.”

Where to start? At the beginning, seems as good a place as anywhere. Having taken the lead through an early Alexander Isak spot-kick, Newcastle lost their captain Jamaal Lascelles to injury and went 2-1 down on the back of first-half goals from Mijchail Antonio and Mohammed Kudus.
Jarrod Bowen extended West Ham’s lead shortly after the break and things went from bad to worse for Newcastle when they lost Tino Livramento and the substitute Miguel Almiron to injury. With Fabian Schar also struggling but unable to come off, Newcastle’s goose looked cooked but they showed remarkable spirit and resilience to come back and secure the victory. Alexander Isak scored his second from the spot to reduce their deficit before a late brace from Harvey Barnes won all three points for the hosts.
Newcastle take all three points but having lost another three or four players to injury, not to mention ANthony Gordon to a late red card, one wonders if they’ll actually be able to field a team for their game against Everton on Tuesday night!

It’s all over! Newcastle win an incredibly exciting game of football having come from 3-1 down to prevail by the odd goal in seven. It was a thrilling match that had everything and arguably the match of the Premier League season so far.
90+9 min: No it isn’t. Fabianski launches the ball forward for West Ham as whistles ring out around St James’ Park. West Ham get the ball into the Newcastle penalty area, where Ings is unable to get a shot off. Elliot Anderson smashes the ball downfield and still there’s no final whistle.
90+8 min: Paqueta launches the ball towards Soucek, who fouls Dan Burn. It’s a free-kick for Newcastle and that might be that.
90+7 min: Soucek gets on the end of a cross from the right but can only chest the ball into the side-netting.
Red card! Anthony Gordon is sent off
90+5 min: Anthony Gordon gets his second yellow card for petulantly kicking the ball away after conceding a free-kick and is sent off. He’s been Newcastle’s man of the match but now joins their list of absentees as he’ll have to serve a ban on Tuesday night. He gets a standing ovation as he leaves the pitch.

David Moyes is also booked for haranging the fourth official, presumably over the second penalty which might have been a bit harsh. West Ham are leading against a severely depleted Newcastle side but the home side are looking the more likely scorers at the moment.
79 min: Harvey Barnes tries to pick out Isak with a pull-back from the byline to the near post but the Swede is unable to steer a shot on goal under pressure from Kurt Zouma.

74 min: On as a substitute, Kalvin Phillips appears to catch Anthony Gordon with a poor challenge in the West Ham penalty area. There’s a VAR check for a penalty and referee Rob Jones is sent to his monitor. The penalty is given against the luckless Phillips, who claims he didn’t know Gordon was in his way as he tried to clear the ball.

70 min: Anthony Gordon swings a cross in from the left and Harvey Barnes makes excellent contact. Lukasz Fabianski saves superbly at his near post.
67 min: It’s like the set of a John Wick movie at St James’ Park, such is the number of bodies that are dropping. Miguel Almiron is forced off with a hamstring injury just a couple of minutes after coming on and is replaced by Harvey Barnes. Elsewhere, Fabian Schar has also done his hammy but can’t be replaced.
65 min: Now it’s Longstaff’s turn to miss a sitter! In a packed West Ham penalty area, Guimaraes threaded a weighted pass through the inside left for Almiron. He squared it for Longstaff, who should have swept home with his left foot but went with his right instead and sent the ball horribly wide.
64 min: Isak completely miskicks the ball from an excellent position nine or 10 yards out after it had been squared to him by Almiron following something of a scramble in the West Ham penalty area.
62 min: Newcastle are working hard to try to get back into this game but West Ham have their hosts right where they want them. They’ll be happy to to defend the edge of their penalty area and hope to catch Newcastle on the break.
60 min: After good work by Almiron, Guimaraes drills a low diagonal ball through the West Ham penalty area towards the far post, where Isak is lurking with intent. Mavrapanos makes another crucial interception.
56 min: Newcastle triple-substitution: Lewis Hall, Miguel Almiron and Elliot Anderson on for Tino Livramento, Emile Krafth and Joe Willock. A penny for the thoughts of Emile Krafth, the substitute who has just been substituted. He looks gutted.
54 min: Newcastle left-back Tino Livramento goes down injured after rolling his ankle while tracking a Lucas Paqueta run down the touchline. There’s a break in play as he receives treatment.
52 min: Bowen finds himself in space on the right, canters forward and tries to cut inside. Dan Burn stands firm and the ball goes out for a corner. Nothing comes of it.
48 min: West Ham broke upfield from a Newcastle corner with Kudus on the ball. With almost the entire Newcastle defence committed forward, he does superbly to pull the ball inside to Jarrod Bowen, who finds himself clean through on goal just inside the Newcastle half. Bowen advances at speed and shoots past Dubravka from the edge of the penalty area.

Second half: Newcastle 1-2 West Ham
46 min: Play resumes and Lucasz Fabianski is on in goal for West Ham in place of the injured Alphonse Areola.
West Ham’s second goal: As he fouled Kudus, Fabian Schar was caught in the face by the fingers of the Ghanaian’s trailing hand. As head “injuries” go, it clearly wasn’t even remotely serious and the Newcastle defender did seem to make rather a meal of it as he went to ground outside his own penalty area.
Referee Rob Jones had a perfect view of proceedings and was happy to let West Ham take their quick free-kick. The Newcastle defence, by contrast, had completely switched off. You’d have to say that on the face of all available evidence, Newcastle’s case for the goal being disallowed is extremely weak, bordering on non-existent although fans of the cluyb clearly disagree.
An addendum: Martin Dubravka got a fairly strong hand to Kudus’s rising shot from 12 yards but was unable to keep it out.

A cracking first half: We were expecting goals in this game and it has delivered. Anthony Isak opened the scoring for Newcastle from the penalty spot following a Vladimir Coufal lunge on Anthony Gordon. The Swedish striker had a long wait before taking the penalty, as there was a lengthy VAR check for a potential offside in the build-up to the foul.
Michail Antonio equalised for West Ham, taking advantage of a forced reshuffle in the Newcastle defence to latch on to an excellent through-ball from Lucas Paqueta and fire past Martin Dubravka. Deep in injury time, West Ham took the lead through Mohammed Kudus, who put his side ahead with a fine strike after combining with Jarrod Bowen. The duo had been quiet until that point before linking up to devastating effect.
Half-time: Newcastle 1-2 West Ham
Peep! A mightily entertaining half of football comes to an end and Rob Jones’ whistle is greeted by boos from the home crowd. The locals, along with Eddie Howe, are incandescent with rage that West Ham were allowed to take the quick free-kick that led to their sec ond goal while Fabian Schar was lying on the ground with what looked like a head injury.

West Ham lead! With Fabian Schar lying on the ground injured after fouling Kudus, Lucas Paqueta takes a quick free-kick. He plays the ball toi Bowen, who squares it for Kudus. The Ghanaian fires a rising drive past Dubravka and into the right side of the side-netting.

45+6 min: Crikey! Bruno Guimaraes thumps the angle of upright and cross-bar with a shot from distance that may have taken a nick off James Ward-Prowse before West Ham launch a counter-attack. Kudus gets past Dan Burn and is through on goal but Burn recovers.
The Newcastle centre-half bundles Kudus over just outside the Newcastle penalty area. It looked like a blatant shove to me but Burn goes unpunished. David Moyes is furious and thinks his side should have had a free-kick.
45+5min: I suspect item one on David Moyes’s half-time agenda will be to figure out a way of getting Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen into this game. They’ve done very little.
45+4 min: Alphonse Areola gets down to save a weak Joe Willock shot from distance.
45+2 min: Anthony Gordon goes down clutching his ankle after being fouled by Paqueta. He gets back to his feet to take a free-kick from wide on the left. He overhits the dead ball and sends it curling wide of the far post, despite the best attempts of Sean Longstaff to get his head to it.
45 min: Alphonse Areola remains on the pitch for Wesat Ham but is no longer taking their goal-kicks. Jacob Murphy tries to pick out Isak with an excellent diagonal from deep but Mavrapanos sticks out a leg to hook it clear despite facing his own goal. It’s a superb, potentially goal-saving clearance on the stretch. We’ll have 10 minutes of added time.

43 min: I suspect we’ll have quite a lot of added minutes at the end of this first half, making up for the time taken for the VAR check after Newcastle were awarded their penalty and the treatment for Jamaal Lascelles.
40 min: Thomas Soucek is booked for a foul on Bruno Guimaraes, who has been in the wars with his international teammate Lucas Paqueta throughout this first half but is clattered by somebody new on this occasion.
39 min: Lukasz Fabianski is preparing to come on for West Ham, as Alphonse Areoila seems to have piucked up an injury.
38 min: Dan Burn can only half-clear a James Ward-Prowse free-kick from deep and the ball breaks to Jarrod Bowen. He doesn’t get enough power on his low snap shot and Dubravka gets down to save comfortably.
36 min: Oof! An unmarked Anthony Gordon gets on the end of a cross from the right and sends a bullet header flashing narrowly wide of the right upright. He should have scored!
34 min: Bruno Guimaraes catches his compatriot Luca Paqueta with a kick to the ankle and the West Ham midfielder goes down injured. He was unmarked in the build-up to West Ham’s equaliser, left free to play Michail Antonio in behind a disjointed defensive line.
Martin Dubravka could arguably have done better in the Newcastle goal, choosing to remain on his line when he could have sprinted out of his penalty area to try to beat Antonio to the through ball. Sadly for Newcastle, that’s not really their reserve goalkeeper’s style.
32 min: Gordon and Willock combine down the left but get their wires crossed and the ball ends up running out of play for a West Ham goal-kick.
30 min: Anthony Gordon skips up the inside left and pulls the ball back into the centre but succeeds only in giving it away to Jarrod Bowen, who is arguably his main rival for a place in the England squad for Euro 2024.
28 min: Emile Krafth fouls Mohammed Kudus to nip a promising West Ham counter-attack in the bud and send David Moyes into a state of apoplexy on the touchline. The substitute somehow avoids a yellow card.
26 min: Jarrod Bowen tries to wriggle his way upfield but is dispossessed by a combination of Joe Willock and Dan Burn.
25 min: West Ham attack and Mohammed Kudus tries his luck from distance. His shot is blocked by Fabian Schar. There’s no kudos for Kudus on this occasion.
24 min: Anthony Gordon bears down on the West Ham goal beforer trying to curl the ball poast Areola. He doesn’t get enough whip on his effort and the goalkeeper is able to save comfortably.

West Ham are level! Having gone close with a dipping effort while Newcastle were rearranging their defence, Michail Antonio scores the equaliser. He takes advantage of Newcastle’s high defensive line to run on to a Lucas Paqueta pass from deep and finding himself one-on-one with Martin Dubravka, spanks the ball into the back of the net.

16 min: Tino Mavropanos launches the ball forward in the general direction of Jarrod Bowen but Dan Burn takes possession to avert any danger.
14 min: Lascelles gets back to his feet but is treading very gingerly. He’s done a mischief to his right knee and is now testing it by gently jogging up and down along a stretch of the touchline. He’s fit to continue, for now at least.
12 min: Oh dear. While tussling with Michail Antonio, Jamaal Lascelles goes down injured, twisting his knee. His reaction suggests it could be the end of his afternoon. More injury woe for Newcastle; there’s a break in play while the skipper receives treatment.
11 min: Bruno Guimaraes sends a long-range effort whistling wide of the West Ham goal.
10 min: It was a cannily won penalty by Anthony Gordon, who got himself between Coufal and a loose ball in the penalty area, drawing a kick on the ankle from the Czech defender.
9 min: West Ham corner. Jarrod Bowen’s inswinger is headed clear by Fabian Schar at the near post.
8 min: Mohammed Kudus surges through midfield before playing the ball wide to Jarrod Bowen. Dan Burn puts an abrupt stop to his gallop.

Eddie Howe: “We’re looking forward to the last 10 games,” says the Newcastle manager. “We know it’s a big part of our season and there’s still a lot to play for. We are confident in ourselves but we need to win to get to where we want to be.”
David Moyes: “Every game now is important, We have nine to play and every game is going to be vitally important to pick up as many points as we can,” the West Ham manager tells TNT Sports. “There’s a few teams chasing to be in and around the European spots and we’re one of them.”

West Ham will be without Edson Alvarez for today’s game as their Mexican midfielder is obliged to sit two matches out on the Naughty Step after picking up his 10th yellow card of the season. Mohammed Kudus is reported to have made a full recovery from a knee injury, while West Ham’s medical staff are monitoring the fitness of Lucas Paqueta and Vladimir Coufal.
Newcastle have lost central defender Sven Botman for approximately nine months to a torn ACL, the Dutchman having exacerbated a pre-existing injury he picked up earlier this season by playing on against advice from the club doctors.
Midfielder Lewis Miley has also been added to Newcastle’s list of the lame and halt after suffering a back injury while on England U-20 duty and is expected to be out for six weeks. Callum Wilson, Nick Pope and Joelinton also remain sidelined. In better news for Mags fans, Harvey Barnes, Kieran Trippier and Tino Livramento could all return today.
It emerged this week that Sandro Tonali, who is currently serving a 10-month worldwide suspension imposed by the Italian Football Federation for a breach of betting regulations, is now facing new Football Association charges that could see his ban extended.
Eddie Howe has asked the FA not to throw the book at his midfielder, pointing out that Tonali has a gambling problem which he is addressing and has already been sufficiently punished. While it’s obviously in Howe’s best interests to get the Italian back as soon as possible, it’s difficult to disagree with him on this one.

Premier League: Newcastle v West Ham
After a two-week hiatus, the Premier League is back and it resumes with an intriguing clash between Newcastle and West Ham at St James’ Park.
In tenth place with just 10 games to go, Newcastle can still qualify for the Europa Conference League and will move to within one point of seventh placed West Ham with a win today. Victory for West Ham would see them leapfrog Manchester United into sixth place, having played two games more.
In the corresponding fixture at the London Stadium in October, the sides played out a 2-2 draw, with West Ham rescuing a point courtesy of terrific late strike from Mohammed Kudus. Kick-off in Newcastle is at 12.30pm (GMT) but stay tuned in the meantime for team news and build-up.
