Newcastle v Man United live: Osula scores late screamer as 10-man hosts cling on to inflict first defeat on Carrick

Substitute Will Osula inflicted a first defeat as Manchester United boss on Michael Carrick with a superb solo goal late in the second half of a dramatic encounter at St James’ Park.

Newcastle were reduced to 10 men in a breathless end to the first half as Jacob Ramsey received a second yellow for simulation, with Anthony Gordon putting the hosts in front moments later from the penalty spot after United captain Bruno Fernandes fouled him in the box.

The England international slotted a composed strike straight down the middle but United ensured they went into half-time level as Casemiro scored a header from a Fernandes free-kick.

Despite being a man short the Magpies were the better team throughout the second half, and finally got their reward as Osula - who has been a bit-part player this season - turned super-sub with a sublime goal on the counter in the 90th minute.

United threw everyone forward but were unable to claw one back and a run of 11 games unbeaten came to a juddering halt, while Newcastle have now won their last four home games in succession against the Red Devils.

'Newcastle deserved to win' - Michael Carrick

23:10 , Flo Clifford

He continues: “Why was the character lacking? It wasn't. It was just the quality and the performance. Not the character. We wanted to win. It's easy to throw that out when you don't win a game of football.

“We weren't there in terms of quality. Credit to Newcastle. They deserved to win tonight. It hurts me to say that but that's how it was. We need to get back to working and be better for the next game.

“We've lost one game, we haven't played well enough but in the grand scheme of things but we are in a good position.

“We have to learn from it and get better for it. We had a lot of praise lately and the boys deserve it, this doesn’t change how we approach the next game. We’ve got everything to play for.”

'Bitterly disappointed' - Michael Carrick

22:58 , Flo Clifford

A dejected Michael Carrick, who has just suffered his first defeat as Manchester United interim boss, tells TNT Sports: “We are not happy the way we played tonight.

“The way the game panned out we had it in our hands largely but credit to Newcastle and they way they approached it, we knew it would be tough but we navigated the game to a position where we could kick on but we didn’t. Bitterly disappointed really.

“I don’t think it was the 10 men, we just didn’t play good enough. We can’t make excuses for that. We all take responsibility for that.”

'The best feeling ever' - Osula

22:36 , Flo Clifford

A beaming Will Osula tells TNT Sports: “That was, like, the best feeling ever. I was so happy for that. You know, when I came on, I just prayed I was going to score, make something happen, and thank God that happened.

“I was practising that in the finish yesterday in training. Any chance, cut in and finish it. So I'm happy the hard work paid off.”

'Nothing less than Newcastle deserve'

22:29 , Chris Wilson

Reaction to that result from Chris Wilson at St James’ Park:

“Nothing less than Newcastle deserve after a hugely entertaining match at St James’.

“The hosts were almost robbed of a result by that Ramsey red card but a superb William Osula strikes seals three points and lifts them into 12th, five points behind Brentford in seventh.

“A performance with that amount of energy and heart could really hurt Barcelona in just under a week’s time too.”

FULL-TIME: Newcastle 2-1 Man United

22:19 , Flo Clifford

‘90+9: 10-man Newcastle beat Manchester United! It’s Michael Carrick’s first defeat!

Substitute Will Osula is the hero of the hour, and St James’ Park is absolutely bouncing.

Newcastle 2-1 Man United

‘90+8: Fernandes lofts it in, Burn boots it away... where is the full-time whistle?!

Carrick has a face like thunder. Howe is pacing up and down.

‘90+7: Trippier heads away a long ball by United and gestures to the referee to blow the full-time whistle.

Tonali goes to ground, looks like a bit of cramp or a tweak to his lower leg, and will come off for Botman.

‘90+4: Five minutes are added on...

(REUTERS)

'Lammens was nowhere near it!'

22:12 , Chris Wilson

Reaction to that goal from Chris Wilson at St James’ Park:

“What a goal from William Osula! It felt like Newcastle could nick something and they might well have nicked the win late on!

“It’s brilliantly taken from the Newcastle substitute, who punishes some lacklustre Man Utd defending and then curls in a brilliant effort that Lammens was nowhere near.

“Five minutes of added time for the hosts to hold on here – is Michael Carrick heading for a first loss in his second spell as Man Utd interim?”

GOAL! Newcastle 2-1 Man United

22:11 , Flo Clifford

‘90: Bedlam in St James’ Park!

It’s a sensational goal by Osula, a great ball forward as Newcastle counter; he goes for a lovely little step over, bends it round Maguire, and curls into the back of the net!

Osula sprints over to the supporters to celebrate and is absolutely mobbed, first by the fans and then by his entire team.

SAVE! Newcastle 1-1 Man United

22:09 , Flo Clifford

‘89: High-fives for Ramsdale as Zirkzee aims a rocket into the top corner but Ramsdale gets his fingertips to it! Brilliant save, but a corner for United...

Headed away.

Newcastle 1-1 Man United

22:08 , Flo Clifford

‘88: United are turning up the heat. Burn makes the block from Cunha! Newcastle are under pressure, Fernandes releases Amad... Ugarte takes a venomous shot from the edge of the area but Tonali blocks!

Newcastle 1-1 Man United

22:07 , Flo Clifford

‘87: Malacia replaces Mazraoui, who is limping a little. For Newcastle, Elanga is replaced by Murphy and Gordon by Osula.

Into the last few minutes of normal time...

Newcastle 1-1 Man United

22:02 , Flo Clifford

‘82: Dalot hauls down Willock in a dangerous position, but Tonali’s delivery is punched away by Yoro and Lammens... Cunha counters for United and draws the foul from Trippier.

Now Fernandes blasts wide!

OVER THE BAR! Newcastle 1-1 Man United

21:58 , Flo Clifford

‘77: More drama as Ugarte misses another chance to put United in front; again it’s a great ball in from Fernandes but Ugarte sends it onto the roof of the net.

Subs now: Mbeumo and Mainoo are replaced by Amad and Zirkzee.

And a break in play as Ramsdale has tweaked something. Not good news for Newcastle.... but he seems to be okay.

'Carrick in disbelief'

21:56 , Chris Wilson

The latest reaction from Chris Wilson at St James’ Park:

“Not sure Ramsdale had a lot of time to do anything there but it’s a great save nonetheless.

“Carrick has his hands on his head almost in disbelief that that wasn’t put away.”

SAVE! Newcastle 1-1 Man United

21:55 , Flo Clifford

‘75: Tremendous save by Ramsdale! Great ball in by Fernandes, again, Yoro heads it down, but Ramsdale leaps down to punch away!

Newcastle 1-1 Man United

21:51 , Flo Clifford

‘71: Carrick gestures for his players to move the ball more quickly. It’s been a pretty sluggish half so far for United.

WIDE! Newcastle 1-1 Man United

21:47 , Flo Clifford

‘67: Oh, a superb set-piece by Newcastle - everyone’s concentrated at the near post and doesn’t notice Gordon sprinting all the way around the back, he pokes his toe at it at the far post but sends it flashing wide!

CLOSE! Newcastle 1-1 Man United

21:46 , Flo Clifford

‘65: It’s a great delivery by Tonali, Thiaw is close to it... it drops out though and Gordon signals for hand-ball!

The referee is having a look at it, but it would be a bit harsh by the looks of things. VAR agrees.

'Sensible subs from Carrick'

21:45 , Chris Wilson

Reaction to those subs from Chris Wilson at St James’ Park:

“Perhaps wise subs from Carrick just after the hour mark. Both Shaw and Casemiro were on bookings, and with the game poised as it is – and with the energy at St James’ Park - there’s no point in risking it.

“United will miss Casemiro in possession but the introduction of Ugarte could add legs to the midfield.”

Newcastle 1-1 Man United

21:44 , Flo Clifford

‘64: Fernandes floats in a lovely ball for Mbeumo but the latter gets his attempted pivot wrong, sending it out for a goal kick rather than across to Sesko.

Couple of changes for the visitors now: Manuel Ugarte is on for Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot for Casemiro.

Mazraoui is next into the book for hacking down Elanga, and Newcastle have a free-kick...

Newcastle 1-1 Man United

21:39 , Flo Clifford

‘58: Mainoo flicks the ball out under pressure by Willock for a Newcastle corner, and bizarrely the Magpies cluster near the edge of the box. There’s no-one near the keeper and Mbeumo hooks the delivery clear.

Newcastle 1-1 Man United

21:37 , Flo Clifford

‘57: Casemiro does Newcastle a favour by conceding a free-kick by hauling down Joelinton, but the hosts waste it as Burn fouls Maguire in the box.

Newcastle have looked industrious at the start of this half, despite their man disadvantage - they’ve had nearly 70 per cent possession even so. United have been lacklustre in comparison.

Newcastle 1-1 Man United

21:33 , Flo Clifford

‘53: A couple of interesting results elsewhere... Arsenal have won 1-0 against Brighton with just a single shot on target, but City have dropped points in a 2-2 draw at Forest and now sit seven points off the Gunners. United are eight points off City as things stand...

Gordon on the spin fires off a low shot, but it’s a pretty straightforward save for Lammens down the centre.

Newcastle 1-1 Man United

21:30 , Flo Clifford

‘50: Mbeumo lofts in a ball for Sesko but the delivery is a tad heavy. Joelinton busies himself with stopping another counter by Mbeumo. Newcastle have a long second half ahead of them.

SECOND HALF: Newcastle 1-1 Man United

21:26 , Flo Clifford

‘46: Here we go again! More of the same?

One change at half-time: Barnes has been replaced by Willock.

'Newcastle will definitely feel like they can nick something'

21:24 , Chris Wilson

Reaction to that first half from Chris Wilson at St James’ Park:

“It was a high-tempo first half anyway but that final 10 minutes or so were a breathtaking mix of bemusement and end-to-end action.

“Newcastle were on top for a large portion of the first half but a second yellow for Jacob Ramsey – for diving – meant he was sent off just after the clock hit 45 minutes, leaving Newcastle plenty to do.

“Nevertheless, the magpies got a lifeline after a silly foul from Bruno Fernandes gave them a penalty that Anthony Gordon duly slotted for the opener.

“However, the potential scale of the task with 10 men later showed as Man Utd went on the attack late on and levelled with essentially the last action of the half, Casemiro nodding past Ramsdale at the near post.

“It means we’re all set for an intriguing second half at St James’, and while no game is easy with 10 men, Newcastle will definitely feel like they can nick something this evening.”

'Boos ring around St James’ Park'

21:12 , Chris Wilson

Reaction to that equalising goal from Chris Wilson at St James’ Park:

“Boos ring around St James’ Park as incensed Newcastle fans see their side lose their lead within minutes.

“Chants of ‘Your’re not fit to referee’ could be heard after Peter Bankes awarded that free-kick, and the the visitors scored with more or less the last kick of the half.

“It was a well-taken goal from Casemiro though – the Brazilian has made headed goals a bit of a trademark.”

HALF-TIME: Newcastle 1-1 Man United

21:12 , Flo Clifford

‘45+10: Boos rain down as the whistle finally, finally goes for half-time. A nuts end to that half.

Newcastle are down to 10 after Ramsey’s second yellow, still briefly went ahead through a stellar penalty by Gordon, before Casemiro pulled one back with yet another header from a free-kick.

The Toon Army are very unhappy with how much stoppage time was played there, with United scoring the equaliser in the dying minutes of it.

GOAL! Newcastle 1-1 Man United

21:10 , Flo Clifford

’45+9: Somehow, ludicrously, we’re still going into the ninth minute of what should have been three of additional time. Fernandes plays in a free-kick on the right, it bends beautifully into the path of Casemiro, and he knocks in a header!

(Action Images via Reuters)

'Nothing less than Newcastle deserve'

21:07 , Chris Wilson

Reaction to that opening goal from Chris Wilson at St James’ Park:

“A stonewall penalty after a silly foul from Fernandes and Anthony Gordon steps up and dispatches it comfortably.

“Perhaps deserved after a huge slice of bad luck (or poor refereeing) that originally denied the hosts a penalty and gave them a red card.

“And it’s nothing less than Newcastle deserve after a half in which they’ve been on top for the majority.”

GOAL! Newcastle 1-0 Man United

21:06 , Flo Clifford

‘45+5: Gordon scores straight down the middle! 15 goals in all competitions, and nine straight penalties converted!

10-man Newcastle lead!

PENALTY! Newcastle 0-0 Man United

21:05 , Flo Clifford

‘45+’3: The late first-half drama continues! Newcastle have been reduced to 10 but have a penalty! Gordon cuts into the box, Bruno Fernandes catches him and brings his man down - and Bankes points to the spot!

Gordon will take it...

'Bemusement around St James’

21:04 , Chris Wilson

The latest from Chris Wilson at St James’ Park:

“This half had really sprung into life but the entire match now threatens to be derailed thanks to some poor refereeing.

“VAR can’t interfere with a second yellow but there is bemusement around St James’ as to how Ramsey has been sent off there.”

RED CARD! Newcastle 0-0 Man United

21:02 , Flo Clifford

‘45+1: Newcastle’s task has just got a lot, lot harder. Ramsey trips over Lammens in the box and goes to ground, and Peter Bankes brandishes a second yellow for simulation!

Ramsey is off, and Newcastle are down to 10!

'Man Utd's first clear-cut chance'

21:01 , Chris Wilson

The latest from Chris Wilson at St James’ Park:

“Man Utd’s first clear-cut chance of the half comes after some clever footwork from Sesko, but Ramsdale is eventually equal to Mainoo’s effort from distance, getting across to get a strong hand to it.

“And moments later, it’s a real sitter from Mbeumo as he blasts over the reboun after brilliant work from Cunha on the left.

“The visitors have barely been in it for large portions of this opening 45 but they’ll probably feel they could be ahead!”

OVER THE BAR! Newcastle 0-0 Man United

21:00 , Flo Clifford

‘45: Good grief, Cunha makes a great run, cuts inside and Ramsdale dives to save - and Mbuemo blasts the rebound over the bar! Huge wasted opportunity with Ramsdale down on the ground.

SAVE! Newcastle 0-0 Man United

20:59 , Flo Clifford

‘44: Ramsdale has had a relatively quiet outing so far but makes a big save now, denying Mainoo at full stretch! That was out of nowhere, a brilliant strike aimed at the top corner, but Ramsdale was alert to the danger.

Newcastle 0-0 Man United

20:55 , Flo Clifford

‘39: Joelinton plays with fire now, he concedes a silly free kick and earns a yellow, then sarcastically applauds the referee. Tonali hops over to tell him to knock it off before he gets sent off.

Now Shaw goes into the book for hauling down Elanga... referee Peter Bankes is getting a bit busy with those cards now.

'Newcastle remain a real threat'

20:51 , Chris Wilson

The latest from Chris Wilson at St James’ Park:

“The visitors have certainly settled over the last 10 minutes or so, though it all looks a little pedestrian in attack when Newcastle have men behind the ball.

“The hosts have been a little disjointed in attack over the last few minutes but they remain a real threat on the counter, as shown by Joelinton and co. there.”

OVER THE BAR! Newcastle 0-0 Man United

20:50 , Flo Clifford

‘35: Thiaw concedes a free-kick. Fernandes lofts it in and Thiaw redeems himself by clearing it... and Newcastle counter!

Gordon makes a tremendous run and fizzes it across to Joelinton - he dances down the pitch, it’s all Joelinton, but he blasts over! Enormous, terrible waste.

Newcastle 0-0 Man United

20:46 , Flo Clifford

‘31: Mbuemo lofts in a ball which bounces off Trippier and nearly into his own net! Man United are definitely back in this now, with Newcastle having eased off that early pressure. Will they come to rue that?

Newcastle 0-0 Man United

20:42 , Flo Clifford

‘26: Ramsey is the first into the book for a cynical pull on Casemiro.

CLOSE! Newcastle 0-0 Man United

20:40 , Flo Clifford

‘24: Bit of a break in play as Trippier catches an unfortunate stray boot in the face from Cunha.

Now United go close! Fernandes lofts it in and Tonali makes himself a real nuisance as Sesko tries to turn and shoot, the Slovenian reaching for it again with an outstretched foot but fouling Tonali in the process.

'Man Utd have started slowly'

20:36 , Chris Wilson

The latest from Chris Wilson at St James’ Park tonight:

“The visitors have barely been able to get into this game in the opening 15 minutes, with Newcastle dominating midfield and having all of the chances so far.

“United have started slowly a few times in recent games and they are certainly doing so again, with the athleticism of the home midfield proving a problem for Carrick at present.”

(Getty Images)

CLOSE! Newcastle 0-0 Man United

20:35 , Flo Clifford

‘20: Tonali flashes wide! From a great position... that’s a missed opportunity.

(AFP via Getty Images)

Newcastle 0-0 Man United

20:34 , Flo Clifford

‘18: Thiaw cuts out a pass as United have a rare foray up the field. Shaw goes down rather dramatically after an aerial duel with Burn and gestures as if to say he’s been violently elbowed in the face, which feels a bit of a stretch. VAR have a look, but make nothing of it.

Can Newcastle capitalise on this early pressure?

CLOSE! Newcastle 0-0 Man United

20:30 , Flo Clifford

‘14: Newcastle are really piling on the pressure. Elanga volleys wide before Tonali sends a ball into the box... Joelinton takes a bit of a stumble but Newcastle keep it alive: Gordon flicks it on for Barnes and he takes a shot but it fizzes wide and over!

Newcastle 0-0 Man United

20:25 , Flo Clifford

‘10: Elanga and Barnes combine in the box and the home fans bellow for a Man Utd handball off Mazraoui, but VAR have a quick look and find nothing of note, and Barnes has a shot blocked on the edge of the area.

Now Elanga shoves Mazraoui over needlessly.

OVER THE BAR! Newcastle 0-0 Man United

20:22 , Flo Clifford

‘7: Carrick looks a bit dubious on the sidelines.

Sesko plays a lovely little backheel to get United up the pitch and Cunha, off-balance, blasts over! That’s a waste.

'Plenty of tempo from the hosts'

20:20 , Chris Wilson

The latest from Chris Wilson, who’s in place at St James’ Park tonight:

“A bit of surprise and bemusement as Trippier’s cross hit the post, followed by a huge roar from the home crowd as Hall’s volley whistled over the bar.

“Plenty of tempo from the hosts early on.”

Newcastle 0-0 Man United

20:20 , Flo Clifford

‘4: Joelinton lays it off for Barnes on the edge of the box; there are plenty of black and white shirts forward but United (Manchester, that is) keep them at bay. A decent start by the hosts.

Hall delivers a cross, Gordon can’t quite get onto it but Trippier lofts it back in - and bounces off the post. Still, an early fright for the visitors and the start Howe was after.

Newcastle 0-0 Manchester United

20:17 , Flo Clifford

‘2: Hall is given some space down the left channel early doors and the hosts look to apply some early pressure.

“It’s always a challenging game, it’s always a good game. It’s the type of atmosphere you want to be involved in,” he explains.

“We’re on a good run, in good shape, but we know this place can throw up many things.”

On United’s schedule, he adds: “For us it’s just about focusing on what we can do in the next game, whenever that is. We can only look after ourselves and try and take care of that, and that’s what we’ve done really.

How the table stands

19:40 , Flo Clifford

These two teams have had quite the turnarounds in fortune over the last few weeks: Michael Carrick hasn’t ruled out a title tilt despite United being 13 points off league leaders Arsenal.

United sit in third, level on points with Aston Villa and three clear of Liverpool in fifth, and are unbeaten in their last 11 top-flight games.

Newcastle meanwhile are down in 13th, 15 points behind after a run of five losses of their last six Premier League encounters. Only crisis-hit Tottenham have had a worse run in that time, earning two points to the Magpies’ three.

How the Premier League fell into a moral panic over set-pieces

19:35 , Jamie Braidwood

With the grappling in the box from corners described as ‘over the top’ and as leaders Arsenal face criticism over their set-piece approach, how did the Premier League get here?

Carrick goes with 'trusted line-up'

19:30 , Chris Wilson

A word on the line-ups from Chris Wilson, who’s in place at St James’ Park tonight:

Michael Carrick goes with what is likely his most trusted line-up at the moment, though the exclusion of Diogo Dalot is notable after the Portuguese struggled at times against Palace at the weekend.

And it seems sensible to start Sesko, Cunha and Mbeumo in their positions even if it did look a little pedestrian and lacking in invention at times AT old Trafford.

Carrick may well have an eye on rumoured midfield target Sandro Tonali tonight too, though Bruno Guimaraes – another rumoured target for the cliub – is injured.

Man United are winning again, but look lopsided — it points to one thing

19:25 , Richard Jolly

The absence of Patrick Dorgu has highlighted United’s squad is missing an out-and-out left winger. They are getting by for now but it will be harder to do so for the whole of next season.

Man United are winning again, but look lopsided — it points to one thing

A vital part of the season for the Magpies

19:20 , Chris Wilson

A word on the line-ups from Chris Wilson, who’s in place at St James’ Park tonight:

A strong line-up for the hosts at the beginning of a huge five-game stretch that sees them play Man Utd tonight before facing Manchester City in the FA Cup this weekend and Barcelona in the Champions League in six days time.

That match is followed by a trip to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea on 14 March, before the second leg of that intriguing European tie at the (new) Camp Nou on 18 March.

It’s certainly a difficult run in what will likely be a pivotal part of the Magpies’ season, but with Howe’s side potentially just five points behind Brentford with a win tonight, they could still be in with a shout of European football if they can turn results around.

Maguire starts

19:16 , Flo Clifford

Harry Maguire had been a doubt due to illness but has also been dealing with some personal matters recently: he was handed a suspended 15-month sentence by a Greek court in a retrial following an incident in Mykonos in August 2020. He trained as normal ahead of this game despite having that rumbling in the background, and is in the starting XI.

Newcastle team news

19:11 , Flo Clifford

And for Newcastle:

Just two changes for the home side, with Eddie Howe opting for Aaron Ramsdale in goal ahead of Nick Pope and Anthony Gordon leading the line, with Nick Woltemade replaced by Harvey Barnes.

Manchester United team news

19:07 , Chris Wilson

For Manchester United, just one change to the side that beat Palace at the weekend, with Diogo Dalot replaced by Noussair Mazraoui at right-back.

Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire are fit to start after being forced off with illness last time out, while Michael Carrick decides to stick with Benjamin Sesko up front and Bryan Mbeumo on the right wing.

Manchester United line-up

19:03 , Flo Clifford

Man Utd XI: Lammens, Mazraoui, Yoro, Maguire, Shaw, Casemiro, Mainoo, Fernandes, Mbeumo, Sesko, Cunha.

Substitutes: Bayindir, Heaven, Malacia, Dalot, Kukonki, T.Fletcher, Ugarte, Amad, Zirkzee

Newcastle line-up

19:03 , Flo Clifford

Newcastle XI: Ramsdale, Trippier, Thiaw, Burn, Hall, Tonali, Ramsey, Joelinton, Elanga, Gordon, Barnes.

Substitutes: Pope, Botman, Wissa, Osula, J. Murphy, Willock, A. Murphy, Shahar, Neave

Michael Carrick addresses Man United future as decision on permanent role looms

18:35 , Richard Jolly

Michael Carrick has accepted it is inevitable there will be talk about him managing Manchester United on a permanent basis after his superb start in charge and stressed that he loves being at Old Trafford.

The 44-year-old has won six of his seven games after being appointed until the end of the season, taking 19 points from a possible 21, while Sunday’s victory over Crystal Palace took United third in the Premier League.

While Carrick has deflected questions about whether he wants the job, he has hinted he does, accepted that questions are the logical consequence of his winning start and said that he is looking to the club’s future in everything he does.

“It's going to be every week, isn't it?” he said. “There's no getting away from the situation. There’s not really an awful lot I can say about it. I love being here. I love doing what I'm doing.”

Michael Carrick says Premier League set-piece tactics have ‘gone too far’

18:20 , Flo Clifford

Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick has weighed in on the Premier League set-piece debate, saying that jostling and grappling in the box during corners has “gone too far”.

An increase in goals from set-pieces has been a major theme of this season, with more dead-ball goals scored in the 2025-26 campaign so far than in the entirety of last season.

Table-topping Arsenal have led the trend and scored another two from corners in their 2-1 win over Chelsea this weekend.

Man United’s Jack Fletcher handed six-game ban for using homophobic slur against opponent

18:05 , Richard Jolly

The Manchester United midfielder Jack Fletcher has been given a six-match suspension after being sent off for calling an opponent a “gay boy”.

The 18-year-old, who is the son of United’s former caretaker manager Darren Fletcher, was shown a red card in an EFL Trophy match against Barnsley in October.

Fletcher, who was also fined £1,500, has been ordered to attend a mandatory face-to-face education programme, though both the FA and the Barnsley player accepted he had no intention to be homophobic.

Thierno Barry came off the bench to fire Everton to Premier League victory at Newcastle for the second successive season in a dramatic conclusion to a madcap encounter.

Barry struck seconds after fellow substitute Jacob Murphy looked to have snatched a draw for the hosts to claim a 3-2 win and condemn the Magpies to a third successive league defeat at St James’ Park, although it took a stunning late save by Jordan Pickford to seal it.

Eddie Howe’s men, who had lost to Aston Villa and Brentford in their previous two home games, have now won just one of their seven most recent league fixtures and find themselves in the wrong half of the table heading into a brutal run of fixtures in three different competitions in March.

Harry Maguire handed 15-month suspended sentence by Greek court over Mykonos incident

17:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Harry Maguire will appeal against a 15-month suspended sentence following a fresh ruling by a Greek court relating to an incident in Mykonos in August 2020.

The Manchester United and England centre-back was found guilty of non-serious assault, resisting arrest, and repeated attempts of bribery, according to Sky Sports.

Maguire was involved in a brawl alongside family members while on holiday on the Greek island and spent two nights in a police cell following his arrest, but has always denied wrongdoing.

While Maguire’s suspended sentence has been reduced in length and severity, the defender is determined to clear his name and will appeal the latest verdict, having refused opportunities to settle.

Newcastle United face Manchester United as the hosts look to improve their dismal Premier League run against the in-form visitors.

Newcastle have lost five of their last six in the Premier League under Eddie Howe, including back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and Everton.

Michael Carrick, meanwhile, has overseen six victories from his seven games in charge of United, following Sunday’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Manchester United have moved into third place in the Premier League while Newcastle are languishing in the bottom half.
