Newcastle United vs West Ham off as Premier League postpone games following Queen's death

Newcastle United and West Ham's clash and all other Premier League fixtures scheduled for this weekend have been postponed following the tragic passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The Queen served as the head of the Royal Family for 70 years, making her Britain's longest-serving monarch. The UK has now entered a national period of mourning which will last until the funeral - traditionally held 10 days later - after her passing at Balmoral on Thursday evening.

In light of the passing, the Premier League have taken the decision to reschedule all top flight games scheduled in that period. A statement read: "At a meeting this morning, Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

"To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game."

Newcastle were due to travel to the capital this weekend for a Sunday afternoon visit to the London Stadium. Eddie Howe's side were due to face West Ham at 2pm BST. That fixture, along with the other nine top flight clashes, will all now be played at a later date.

The EFL will follow suit and wasted no time confirming Friday's Championship clash between Burnley and Norwich City had been postponed late on Thursday evening. “Consideration in respect of EFL fixtures will be discussed with the Government and the wider sport sector during the period ahead and an appropriate announcement will be made at the earliest opportunity,” an EFL spokesperson said.

Newcastle released a statement following the Queen's passing, writing: "Newcastle United and its owners are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," the club wrote. "We join the world in sending our deepest condolences to the Royal Family. All flags at St. James' Park will fly at half mast as we join the country in observing a period of national mourning."

Newcastle Women played Middlesbrough Women on Thursday evening, with the game going ahead despite Her Majesty's passing just hours before kick-off. Arsenal, Manchester United and West Ham United were all in action in the Europa League and observed a minute's silence.
