Newcastle United unwilling to break transfer structure amid Leeds United’s Jack Harrison demands

Newcastle United are unlikely to step up their attempts to sign Leeds winger Jack Harrison. Reports in France claim the Magpies had a £33.5million bid rejected over the weekend as Toon chiefs aim to bolster their attacking options.

Leeds are reluctant to lose another star asset after selling Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha this summer. Because of this, the Elland Road hierarchy have reportedly slapped a £40million price tag on the 25-year-old.

Inflated demands are likely to stave off Newcastle’s interest - despite their new-found status as the “richest” club in world football. So far, the Magpies have been modest in their spending and are yet to break their transfer record since the £300million Saudi-backed takeover, though they did make a £50m move for James Maddison on Monday.

Maddison is one of three players Newcastle are actively chasing, the other two being Chelsea's Timo Werner and Burnley's Maxwell Cornet, which bodes well for Leeds in their desire to keep Harrison at Elland Road this summer.

Sven Botman is the marquee summer addition so far, arriving from Lille for around £32million. Awareness regarding Financial Fair Play constraints means Newcastle are taking a “steady-build’ approach on their path to European stardom - guidelines Manchester City did not have to adhere to when Sheikh Mansour transformed their fortunes in 2008.

Harrison will remain in Yorkshire unless Leeds reduce their high asking price. At Elland Road, the focus is on incomings, with Jesse Marsch also keen to strengthen his frontline before the transfer window slams shut.
