Newcastle United transfers: Alexander Isak still on shortlist as Real Sociedad play hardball

Newcastle United retain an interest in Alexander Isak but it remains to be seen whether the Magpies up their previous bid for the Sweden international.

An offer of around £40million was placed for the Real Sociedad star back in July but the bid didn't suit the La Liga club. Back then sources at Real Sociedad felt that a price closer to £50million was more appropriate.

Since then Newcastle have looked at the possibility of signing other strikers with Colombia striker Luis Muriel said to be on the shortlist. But the Atalanta forward is understood to be waiting for an approach from Juventus.

In what has been a frustrating month for Eddie Howe and sporting director Dan Ashworth, Newcastle at least have the comfort of another three weeks left to trade. Howe has made it clear that he can get by without a striker for now and pointed to the fact that Allan Saint-Maximin and Joelinton can also operate in that position if required.

Goncalo Ramos of Benfica is another player Newcastle are monitoring but the Magpies spent the start of the week eager to bring in a wide player. Both James Maddison and Anthony Gordon are still under consideration if the fee is right Leicester and Everton respectively.

Howe has edged towards another Premier League game without adding a new face to his squad but there is no panic behind the scenes. Newcastle have the financial backing and still have the Premier League loan market in hand.

Meanwhile, Callum Hudson-Odoi has been made available by Chelsea for a loan deal with West Ham and Everton registering early interest. Newcastle were keen to sign the England international during Steve Bruce's time in charge.

Whether he fits the bill for Howe remains to be seen but Howe has made it clear that he is not fussy whether deals that come in or cash buys or loans. Newcastle did not comment on fresh reports on Lucas Paqueta and Ramos last night.
