Club director denies Newcastle bid for Brazilian teenager
Vasco da Gama’s sporting director Paulo Bracks has denied reports suggesting Newcastle have made a bid in the region of £30million for Andrey Santos.
His comments come after Brazilian outlet Globo claimed that the Magpies were willing to pay €35million for the 18-year-old midfielder. Santos has just penned a new deal with his current side until 2027 but is reportedly interested in making a move to Europe.
However, Bracks has told Somos Fanaticos that a bid is yet to arrive from Newcastle.
“I can say that there is no offer from Newcastle for Andrey,” explained Bracks.
“He didn’t receive an offer. Vasco didn’t receive an offer. The player has renewed his contract. The negotiation of players will happen, yes. But not out of necessity, because of choice.”
Santos has been likened to FC Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets and has been a standout star in the Brazilian Serie B (the second tier in Brazil).
Ashworth ‘fully aware’ of U19 Euro champion
Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has revealed that Newcastle director of football Dan Ashworth is ‘fully aware’ of Ronnie Edwards’ quality.
The 19-year-old defender has been a crucial figure for the Posh since arriving from non-league Barnet in August 2020. Edwards has earned 10 caps for England U19s and featured in all but game as the Three Lions lifted the U19 European Championship in July.
He played 38 times across all competitions for Peterborough in 2021/22 and has starred in each of the Posh’s seven league fixtures this season.
MacAnthony told the Peterborough Telegraph: “Barry Fry knows Dan as he started his coaching career at Posh and he asked Dan why he hadn’t come in for our defender, without saying his name.
“We pointed out we had helped Ben White become a £50million defender. Dan said he was fully aware of Ronnie and said he was ‘a Rolls-Royce’, but that Newcastle were strengthening their forward line first.
“Dan said that when he was at Brighton all the dossiers and reports he had on Ronnie were positive.”
Ex-Newcastle boss set for managerial return
Former Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is on the verge of taking over Aris Thessaloniki in Greece just three months after leaving CSKA Sofia. Pardew, who served as manager and technical director of CSKA Sofia, left the Bulgarian capital after bananas were thrown towards CSKA’s black players by their own supporters.
Pardew spent four years at Newcastle after succeeding Chris Hughton in December 2011. Newcastle produced a famous comeback to come from four goals behind to draw 4-4 against Arsenal during his first season, with the late Cheick Tiote scoring a sensational late equaliser.
Newcastle finished the 2010/11 season in 12th place but Pardew propelled them to a 5th place finish in his first full campaign at St James’ Park. He was named Premier League Manager of the Year as a result but was less successful in the 2012/13 season – finishing a disappointing 16th.
Pardew left Newcastle for Crystal Palace in January 2015 and has gone onto manage West Bromwich Albion and ADO Den Haag respectively before his Bulgarian venture.
