Your Newcastle United transfer round-up for Tuesday, May 2.
Nico a no go
Newcastle have missed out on German international Nico Schlotterbeck after the defender joined Borussia Dortmund. Reports had linked the Magpies and Tottenham Hotspur with the centre-back - who made his debut for Germany earlier this year.
It was confirmed on Monday that the 22-year-old had signed for Dortmund from SC Freiburg for a fee worth around £20million. The 22-year-old can also play at left-back and has enjoyed a stellar breakout campaign. Central defence is thought to be an area Newcastle are aiming to improve but their attention must now turn elsewhere.
Lingard 'wants Newcastle move'
Jesse Lingard would prefer to join Newcastle if his time at Manchester United comes to an end, according to The Sun. In January, the Magpies’ advances for the England midfielder were rejected by Old Trafford chiefs - despite the 29-year-old rarely featuring under Ralf Rangnick.
A resurgent Newcastle could offer Lingard first-team football and, in turn, give him a lifeline to reach this winter’s World Cup. However, the report also claims new Man Utd boss Erik Ten Hag is ready to give him a chance to reinvent his Red Devils career.
Both Lingard and Marcus Rashford have fallen down the pecking order in 2021-22 but could be given clean slates under the new manager.
Magpies linked with striker
The Athletic report Newcastle’s priority is to sign a striker this summer. Despite splashing out £25million on Chris Wood three months ago, the New Zealand target man is not considered the long-term solution.
Current number nine Callum Wilson has scored goals since his arrival but injury woes continue to plague his Newcastle career. Signing a striker could elevate the Magpies to the next step and Darwin Nunez is believed to be ‘admired’.
The piece claims head of recruitment Steve Nickson has a ‘host of alternatives’ should, as expected, Nunez head elsewhere. A lack of European football will affect United’s ability to lure the Uruguayan to Tyneside.
