Your Newcastle United transfer round-up for Thursday, June 23.
Eriksen approach
The Magpies have approached Christian Eriksen over a possible free transfer, according to iNews. Brentford took a punt on the Dane in January after he made a full recovery from the cardiac arrest suffered at the Euros last summer.
Eriksen proved he can still compete at the top level at the backend of 2021-22, impressing for the Bees and on international duty with Denmark. Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are also rumoured to be vying for his signature but Brentford are hoping Eriksen shows loyalty by staying for another season.
Signing an established star like Eriksen on a free transfer would be a no-brainer for Toon chiefs if offered the chance. At 30-years-old, the midfielder has several years left to operate in the Premier League.
NUFC exodus on hold
Newcastle are struggling to offload Ciaran Clark, Jeff Hendrick and Dwight Gayle, reports The Athletic. All three players have been made available for transfer after Eddie Howe deemed the trio surplus to requirements.
Clark and Hendrick were omitted from the Magpies’ 25-man squad in January, with the latter joining QPR on loan. Steve Bruce handed Gayle a three-year contract last summer and the piece claims wages are scaring Championship suitors away.
Dan Ashworth faces a task to offload unwanted players off the wage bill as Newcastle look to overhaul their squad this summer.
Pepe on Toon radar
Brazilian outlet UOLEsporte claim Newcastle are plotting a move for Porto winger Pepe. The 22-year-old impressed last year after making a £13million move from Gremio.
A winger is reportedly a priority for the Magpies amid speculated interest in Bayer Leverkusen wideman Moussa Diaby. Pepe has six U23 caps for Brazil, scoring three goals.
The prospect of another South American star gracing the St James’ park turf would surely get supporters excited.
