Here are the latest Newcastle United transfer rumours on Sunday, 28 August.
Newcastle 'preparing second bid' for Edson Alvarez
Having seen a first bid of around £30million rejected for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez, Newcastle are preparing to go back in with an offer of £40million, according to leading Mexican outlet Zona TUDN.
The Mexico international made 41 appearances for Ajax last season on their way to being crowned Dutch champions for the 36th time and could be the second major outgoing from the Johan Cruyff Arena this summer following Lesandro Martinez’s move to Manchester United.
Joao Pedro signing not ruled out
Although reports have gone quiet regarding Newcastle’s pursuit of Watford forward Joao Pedro, there is still a chance that the deal is completed before the end of the transfer window.
According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, discussion continue with the Championship club despite the Magpies spending a club record fee for Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad.
Speaking on Sky Sports News, Sheth said: “I’m told it’s gone quiet with Joao Pedro, but also that it’s not been ruled out. Newcastle’s bid was worth £30m, with £25m guaranteed. It was the structure of the add-ons which was still under discussion.
“Now Isak is in, I wonder if Newcastle go back and try to sort out those add-ons? Yes, they do want to bring in players – let’s see if one will be Joao Pedro.”
Newcastle back in for Memphis Depay?
Having been linked with Barcelona forward Memphis Depay on previous occasions, it has been reported by Calciomercato that Newcastle still have interest in signing the versatile Dutchman before the transfer window closes.
The 28-year-old is free to leave the Nou Camp this summer with Barcelona looking to raise funds amid their financial issues and has recently rejected a move to Juventus, keeping Newcastle in the race.
