A round-up of the latest Newcastle United transfer gossip on Monday, 12 September.
Loris Karius a 'short-term fix' for Newcastle United
Speaking to Football Insider, former England international, Paul Robinson, believes Loris Karius' career has not been the same since the Champions League final back in 2018. Nonetheless, he believes the German will now have an opportunity to put a few demons to bed after signing for Newcastle.
Robinson said: "It is a case of having to sign rather than wanting to sign. Darlow is out for a while so they have to sign somebody. It is a short-term fix.
“Karius has a lot to prove in the Premier League. At the time, Liverpool had two decent goalkeepers. I do not think he was a bad keeper.
“What happened in the Champions League final mentally scarred Karius. Let’s be honest, his career has never been the same since.
“If he gets an opportunity to play in the Premier League we will see how mentally strong he is. Hopefully he can put a few demons to bed.”
Former Newcastle 'target' set for La Liga switch
Marca claim Raul De Tomas, who was linked with a move to Newcastle United earlier this summer, is close to agreeing a move to Rayo Vallecano. The Spaniard was reportedly close to leaving Espanyol prior to deadline day, but a move for the striker stalled.
Espanyol chief Mao Ye claimed a summer move was a possibility. Speaking in August he said: “There is no Raul de Tomas situation. He arrived later in the pre-season and will need more training time to reach the required level.
“He has given us a lot of quality and he is a key part of the squad. This week, La Liga begins and we hope that ‘RDT’ will continue to contribute for us.
“There are days left in the market. And there are always possibilities (that De Tomas could leave). But we have him in our squad.”
Newcastle United eye bold transfer swoop for Sunderland teenager
Newcastle United have been linked with a swoop for highly-rated Sunderland teenager Chris Rigg.
The youngster is still just 15 but the Magpies are keen to add him to their Academy ranks as they look to improve the overall quality under the guidance of Steve Harper. Rigg has been on United's radar for some time with ex-Sunderland coach Elliott Dickman acutely aware of the Black Cats' best players.
The story has been picked up by the Sun on Sunday who say United are in with a good chance of getting Rigg's signature today. Newcastle have already raided Sunderland's youth ranks in recent times by signing Jay Turner-Cooke who has proved to be a massive hit for Dickman's second string.
