Newcastle United transfer rumours as Liverpool join Szoboszlai chase and Magpies end Barella hunt

Here are your Newcastle United transfer rumours on Thursday, June 29.

Liverpool keen on Szoboszlai

Liverpool have entered the race to sign Dominik Szoboszlai, according to the Athletic. The Hungarian international is expected to depart RB Leipzig this summer after a fine season in the Bundesliga.

Szoboszlai has also caught the eye of Newcastle, who have held informal talks with Leipzig in recent weeks. The attacking midfielder has a £61m release clause until the end of the month - but no formal bid has been launched as of yet.

Newcastle fans are hopeful of landing Szoboszlai after James Maddison opted to join Tottenham. Liverpool's interest will be a worry for the Magpies.

Newcastle in the mix to sign Sporting CP star

Newcastle, Arsenal and Liverpool are in the race to sign Sporting CP star Goncalo Inacio. That is according to AS, who claim the 21-year-old centre-half could leave Lisbon this summer.

Inacio, who has already been capped twice by Portugal, was an ever-present for Ruben Amorim's side last season, playing 53 times in all competitions.

A left-sided centre-half, any move for Inacio would see him provide competition for Dutch international centre-half Sven Botman.

Newcastle's interest in Nicolo Barella has ended

The Telegraph have reported that Newcastle have ended their pursuit of Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella as they push towards closing out a move for AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali.

After Newcastle realised a move for West Ham midfielder Declan Rice was out of their price range, the report claims Wolfsburg's Felix Nmecha and Nice's Khephren Thuram were identified as possible alternatives that were within budget, after scouting Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga extensively.

But it was Tonali and Barella who stood out as the best Rice alternatives but initial talks with Inter Milan suggested the Italian international would cost just as much as the England international in terms of transfer fee and wages.

But Tonali proved to be a deal United could afford and that is why quick progress was made on the deal last week, as Dan Ashworth flew out to Milan for talks.

United are expected to confirm the signing of Tonali this week, with the midfielder currently captaining Italy in the European under-21 championships.

Newcastle linked with Napoli defender

According to Spazio Napoli, via Sport Witness, Newcastle have set their sights on Napoli defender Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

The 29-year-old right-back made 47 appearances last term as Napoli won Serie A and reached the Champions League quarter-finals.

The report claims the Newcastle links 'worries' Napoli, but the Italy international is under contract in Naples until 2026.

Arda Guler 'race against time'

Arsenal and Newcastle face a 'race against the clock' to sign the 'Turkish Messi' Arda Guler. Football Insider report that the Fenerbahce star has a £15million release clause valid until June 2025.

But the Turkish giants are keen to tie Guler down to a new deal which will wipe that clause out. The 18-year-old made 35 appearances for Fener last season, scoring six goals and registering seven assists.
