Here are the latest Newcastle United transfer rumours on Wednesday, May 25.
Calvert-Lewin top of Toon’s striker list
There is no secret that Newcastle are heading into the transfer market with another striker on the shopping list. Darwin Nunez was initially understood to be the top target but his Champions League aspirations – as well as the teams who are interested in him – made the Magpies reassess their options.
According to The Telegraph, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is now the first choice on a list of forwards that also includes Ivan Toney. Eddie Howe has been keen to bring proven Premier League talent to St James’ Park so far and either of those would continue the stream of players being signed with English top-flight experience.
Although, both Everton and Brentford will want to keep hold of their marquee strikers so any potential deal would use up a large chunk of the reported transfer budget this summer.

Championship sides on standby if Sean Longstaff wants to leave
Arrivals will understandably dominate the agenda on Tyneside in the next few months but there will have to be some departures to make room in the squad. There is a belief that Sean Longstaff could be one of those who leaves as he will be aware that he is not at the top of Howe’s midfield pecking order with his contract due to expire at the end of June.
Although, after playing every minute of the last three games of the season, he may choose to extend his deal with his boyhood club. If he chooses to let his contract run out, West Brom and Watford are among the sides ready to battle it out for his signature, as per Football League World.
They may well be joined by a couple of the sides who will be competing at the bottom end of the Premier League table next term in the race to sign Longstaff.
Depay drops Barcelona future hint amid Newcastle links
While big-name players don’t seem to be part of the recruitment strategy at St James’ Park, Memphis Depay has been linked with a move in the past few months. Fabrizio Romano confirmed that he was one of the forwards being considered by those at United as reports also broke which linked him to Arsenal.
However, in the Dutchman’s latest social media update, he seems to have alluded to the fact that he will still be at Camp Nou for the start of the 2022/23 campaign. On Tuesday afternoon, he tweeted: “My first season hasn’t turned out how I imagined it, we have to keep working and keep improving to reach our goals next year. Visca Barca.”
