A look at the latest Newcastle United transfer rumours on Saturday, August 20.
Leicester City 'open contract talks' with Newcastle United target James Maddison
Leicester City have “opened” contract talks to tie down Newcastle United target James Maddison, according to LeicesterLive. ChronicleLive understands the Magpies had two bids - the highest in the region of £45million - rejected for the 25-year-old.
The England international has two years left on his current deal and Brendan Rodgers has previously hinted that Leicester may be forced to offload players. As it stands, the Foxes are the only Premier League club yet to spend a penny in the transfer market.
Offloading their star player would have been a grudging way to free up cash but reports suggest Leicester want to keep him at the King Power Stadium. Our sister title claims they are aware of Maddison’s contract situation and want to avoid a similar situation to Youri Tielemans.
The Belgian is down to the final 12 months of his deal and Leicester are desperate to keep their midfield talisman amid interest from Arsenal. Toon chiefs know Maddison could be available on the cheap next summer which is why there is a reluctance to meet the Foxes’ reported £60million price tag.
Christian Pulisic backed for success at St. James' Park mid Newcastle United links
Former Aston Villa and Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish believes Newcastle United could be the club where Christian Pulisic rediscovers his Borussia Dortmund form
“ Pulisic, is he similar to Almiron?” told Football Insider. “He’s not so much a centre-forward, more of a number 10 or he comes in from the wide areas. These are the types of players Newcastle will be looking at.
“Pulisic has not made the impact you thought he might when Klopp had him at Dortmund. Klopp really thought he had everything.
“He hasn’t made the massive impact with Chelsea, even though when he does come on you think ‘wow. this guy catches the eye’. Maybe there is less pressure in going to a club like Newcastle, it might help him.”
Newcastle United's Bruno fears allayed after 'stay' vow and Real Madrid clear up bid talk
Bruno Guimaraes looks set to stay at Newcastle United after Eddie Howe made it clear he has no intention of selling up - and sources close to the player indicating he will remain on Tyneside.
Talk of Real Madrid lining up the Newcastle midfielder as a replacement swept around the football world on Thursday but Howe addressed those concerns at his press conference today.
And while Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti accepts he will lose star midfielder he said he is not looking for a direct replacement: "Casemiro is leaving but we have a lot of resources to replace him. There is no turning back, Casemiro has decided to try a new challenge. We want to wish him the very best.
"Just yesterday I realised that Casemiro is leaving, but our plans don't change - we'll compete for everything with or without Casemiro."
