Newcastle United transfer gossip: Fernandez loan talk as Magpies linked to West Ham defender

Your Newcastle United transfer round-up for Monday, August 29.

Stoke interested in Fernandez

Stoke City are reportedly 'interested' in Newcastle United defender Federico Fernandez, according to journalist Alan Nixon. The former Argentinian international has fallen down the pecking order at St James' Park and has not featured for the Magpies since December.

Nixon claims the Potters want to take Fernandez on loan with the player also keen on a move away in order to play regular first-team football. The report adds that Stoke are trying to ascertain how much of his £60,000 weekly wage they have to pay.

Fernandez has spent the last eight years in England after joining Swansea City from Napoli in 2014. He made 128 appearances in all competitions in South Wales before joining Newcastle in 2019. He has gone on to play 89 times for the Magpies and has a contract that runs until 2023 with the club.

Magpies linked with West Ham youngster

The Daily Mail have claimed that Newcastle are considering a deal for West Ham United right-back Harrison Ashby. The 20-year-old has been promoted into the first team by David Moyes this season but the Magpies are believed to be weighing up a £2.5million bid for the Scotland U21 international.

Newcastle's interest comes after Emil Krafth was ruled out for 'several months' with an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Ashby was an unused substitute in the Hammers' defeats against Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively. He also completed the full 90 minutes at right wingback as West Ham prevailed 3-1 over Danish outfit Viborg FF in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifier first leg.

He made his Premier League debut as a late second-half substitute in West Ham's 2-0 against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in December 2021. Ashby, who joined the Hammers from Chelsea in 2010, has amassed six first-team appearances for West Ham across all competitions.

Hartlepool consider second Joe White loan

League Two outfit Hartlepool United are 'exploring' the possibility of signing Newcastle United midfielder Joe White on loan for the second time. White spent the second half of last season at Victoria Park - register three assists in 16 matches across all competitions.

The Hartlepool Mail report that the Pools are considering the option of bringing White back to the club. Hartlepool boss Paul Hartley has been vocal about his desire to add a forward and a creative midfielder to his squad this summer.

The 19-year-old joined Newcastle from his hometown club Carlisle United in 2016 and signed his first professional contract in 2019. His late grandfather, Peter Hampton, played for Don Revie's Leeds United and also played more than 100 times for Stoke City and Burnley.

White has played a combined 64 games for the U18s and U21s - scoring 10 goals and providing 13 assists. He has also been an unused substitute three times for the first team in the Premier League.
