Newcastle United transfer gossip as quartet in new deal talks, Matt Targett future latest

Here are the latest Newcastle United transfer rumours on Tuesday, 22 February.

Contract update

Newcastle United are reportedly in talks with four players over extending their current deals with the club.

That is according to the Daily Telegraph, who claim that Fabian Schar, Jonjo Shelvey, Paul Dummett and Sean Longstaff could all sign new contracts at St. James' Park.

Schar, Dummett and Longstaff's current deals are all set to expire at the end of the season, while Shelvey is out of contract in 2023.

Longstaff has been in talks with the club for a number of weeks now, while the other three have seemingly done enough under Eddie Howe’s management to earn themselves an extension.

Targett deal

Newcastle United are reportedly keen on converting Matt Target’s loan switch into a permanent deal this summer.

That is according to journalist Rudy Galetti, who also claims that Targett is loving his time in the Northeast so far.

Targett made the temporary move to St. James’ Park from Aston Villa on deadline day last month and has looked impressive so far.

He has started two matches during his time at the club and was singled out for praise by manager Eddie Howe at the weekend.

Sule rejected Newcastle

Former Bayern Munich midfielder Lothar Matthaus has revealed that Niklas Sule turned down a move to Newcastle United last month.

Sule was set to be a free agent in the summer but has already agreed a pre-contract agreement with Borussia Dortmund.

Speaking to Sky Deutschland, Matthaus was asked about Sule’s move from Bayern Munich to Dortmund.

He said: “It is not about money. Otherwise, he would have gone to England.

“He had an offer from Newcastle United, where he would have earned twice as much. He is looking for a sporting challenge. And at Bayern he no longer felt valued. In recent years, Sule has often been attacked because of his weight and no one has protected him.

“During his long injury break, he sacrificed himself for the club. He won the Champions League and played great games. The club didn’t get enough. And I know that is the reason why Sule said to his team of advisors, ‘we don’t need to talk to Bayern anymore. I want to go’”
