Newcastle United told what to do in the transfer window after 'pivotal' Leeds United win

With just nine days to go until the end of the January transfer window, time is running out for Newcastle United to do any more business before the end of the month.

Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood are the Magpies' only two signings in the winter market so far but both played an important role in the Magpies' crucial 1-0 win over Leeds United on Saturday.

Jonjo Shelvey's second-half free-kick proved to be the difference at Elland Road as Newcastle recorded their second win of the season which takes them to within touching distance of moving out of the relegation zone.

However, there's just over a week left until deadline day and the Magpies faithful have called for Eddie Howe to further strengthen his squad to give them the best chance of staying in the division.

A number of players have been linked with becoming Newcastle's third addition of the month, including Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard, Sevilla's Diego Carlos and Bayer Leverkusen full-back Mitchel Bakker.

Despite the win over Leeds, some United supporters are hoping to see more business done and want reinforcements to come through the door before January 31 given the club's precarious position.

Here is what some had to say on social media.

@1AntB : Big win for our relegation battle but in the short term that could be a MASSIVE win for our efforts in the transfer market. The next 9 days will give us an idea of how likely we are to escape the drop zone. 3 injuries today too that could force the owners’ hand’s #NUFC

@GianfrancoShola : Huge win at such a pivotal time of the window. Sets us up for such an important week in the transfer market (amplified by the injuries today) today may just give those considering joining some level of added hope. Buzzing. HWTL #nufc

@NortyDocuments : Think that result helps us in the transfer market at least it shows that glimmer of hope #NUFC

@wa7th3m : Now let’s go out and smash the transfer market this week and set us up nicely for the rest of the season #nufc

@Fosteerio : Right, get straight to work in this transfer window! #NUFC

@justPaulWatson : A #nufc win is more than 3pts. It takes us 1 point from safety, transfer targets see this too. If we’re cut adrift, they’d think otherwise. Everton and Brentford in free fall, Watford shite and Burnley having 5 in hand may not be a good thing for them. 5 defeats and GD suffer.

@nufcsanjay : Hopefully we can all breath a bit easier over the next 17 days now. Just got to trust that we plug a few gaps in what remains of the transfer window, and we can go into the Everton game re-energized. It suddenly feels a lot less tense... #NUFC

@Alex_Beeby : If @NUFC can sign the players we need next week whilst having a 2 week break i believe we will stay up. But that is a big IF !! Transfers have been hard to come by past few weeks #NUFC Everton game is massive !!

@StephenMurray97 : With the break until the next game coinciding with the end of the transfer window and considering the decent run of fixtures coming up, that really is a massive win.

Newcastle now head into a winter break, where they will head to Saudi Arabia for some warm weather training to re-charge the batteries ahead of another important game against Everton on Tuesday, February 8.

Duncan Ferguson's side could also be dragged into a relegation battle following their 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa, which leaves them just four points and two places above the bottom three.

The Magpies will then host Villa on February 13, before travelling to West Ham United in what is poised to be an important period in the fight to stay in the top-flight.
