Newcastle United told they have 'great chance' of Champions League football amid top four chase

Newcastle United's last-minute 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest has given them a "great chance" of finishing in the Champions League places at the end of this season, according to Clinton Morrison.

Newcastle sit just two points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with two games in hand over their top-four rivals heading into the international break. Alexander Isak's last-minute penalty against Nottingham Forest on Friday night at the City Ground has seen the Magpies head into the domestic football hiatus on a high.

In what looked set to be a frustrating draw against Steve Cooper's side, the Swede's injury-time spot-kick - his second of the game - ensured that the Tyneside club would claim all three points having dominated the vast majority of the match.

And now Morrison has told Eddie Howe's squad that although there are many other teams battling for that coveted fourth spot, the victory over Forest has given them a great chance of playing in Europe's premier competition in the 2023/24 season.

"They've got a great chance of finishing in the top four," he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport "I still think there's a few teams in there; Liverpool, Brighton have got a chance and obviously there's Tottenham.

"But this is a big victory for them because they probably thought they were only going to get a point but they got a penalty at the end and I think Isak was the difference."
