Newcastle United to receive January transfer bonus from FIFA for World Cup stars

Newcastle United are probably the last club on earth in need of emergency funds following the Saudi-backed takeover last October. By all accounts, the Public Investment Fund's 80 percent stake at St James' Park makes the Magpies the wealthiest club in world football.

However, Toon chiefs are set to receive a slight windfall in the New Year on the back of the World Cup. Earlier this year, FIFA announced that clubs who release players for the tournament will be compensated.

A statement read : "As part of its commitment to recognise the contribution that football clubs make to the successful staging of the FIFA World Cup, today FIFA started the application process for its Club Benefit Programme that will see $209million (£171.4million) distributed to clubs across the world. This initiative already saw 416 clubs from 63 member associations benefiting from the same amount following the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

"For the first time, clubs will be able to apply digitally through the FIFA Professional Football Landscape platform with approximately $10,000 (£8,202) to be received for each one of the days the relevant player remains with his national team during the FIFA World Cup 2022 and the official preparation period. The compensation will be paid to all clubs for which the footballer has played in the two years prior to the FIFA World Cup 2022."

Newcastle will be granted compensation for six players who travelled to the World Cup. Fabian Schar, Callum Wilson, Kieran Trippier, Nick Pope and Bruno Guimaraes represent those currently at the club.

As the latter three recently arrived on Tyneside, their funding will be split between Atletico Madrid, Burnley and Lyon respectively. Likewise, the Magpies should also receive cash for United States star DeAndre Yedlin, who left the club in January 2021.

Youngster Garang Kuol has starred for Australia in Qatar but is not included as he does not officially sign terms until the New Year - ruling him out of the list. The expected windfall provides a small financial boost for Newcastle ahead of the upcoming transfer window.
