Newcastle United supporters are getting emotional on social media as Jonjo Shelvey prepares to bid farewell after seven years at the club. ChronicleLive understands Nottingham Forest is his next destination, with a deal expected to be completed in the coming hours.
The 30-year-old arrived on Tyneside in 2016 and, while failing to keep the club up, helped secure an instant return to the Premier League the following season. Shelvey would prove instrumental in keeping Newcastle afloat during the latter Mike Ashley years.
Arguably his finest moment in a Toon shirt was scoring the crucial goal away at Leeds United last season. A scruffy free-kick earned a crucial 1-0 win and proved the catalyst for Eddie Howe’s remarkable turnaround.

Injuries have hampered his 2022-23 campaign, with a hamstring strain suffered in pre-season against Benfica ruling him out for several months. A frustrating season continued when a calf problem sidelined Shelvey for a second time shortly after making a return.
The former England international is nearing full recovery and should play a part in Forest’s quest for survival. Newcastle fans wished the long-serving midfielder well once news broke on social media.
@connorlindsell_: With Shelvey leaving, i have to go back to his debut v West Ham. One of the best passers of the ball I’ve ever seen. All the best Jonjo.
@Paul85H: Weird seeing players like Shelvey leave. Especially having stayed after relegation. Feel like those who stuck it out during the Ashley era deserve some sort of recognition for keeping us afloat. Any success we may have going forward is built upon them keeping us in the PL
@Mikeale89924753: On another note. It really does feel like the end of an era with Shelvey going. Also one of the old regimes highest earners off the books and a longer contract for Jonjo at Forest so it’s good for both parties
@MagpieMadman: Definition of an unsung hero and loves the club. Wish him nothing but the best and will be welcome back to the city any time
@iKamalSheikh: Thank you Jonjo Shelvey for 7 magnificent years at Newcastle. I wish you all the best at Nottingham. Jonjo will always be in our heart (nufc fans). He was very important for us when we dropped to the championship & influential towards our comeback to the EPL.
