Newcastle United set to add another coach to Eddie Howe's backroom team after departure

Eddie Howe is set to make another addition to his backroom team after the departure of goalkeeper coach Simon Smith.

Smith's departure was confirmed by the club last week and explained his absence from pre-season with both former Academy coach Adam Bartlett, who had been working with Smith, and Daniel Marti working with the keepers this summer. Howe has stated he will look to bring in another specialist coach in due course.

He said: "We will certainly stick with Adam Bartlett but we may look to add somebody to the group to give him support. I'd like to pay tribute to Simon Smith after the work he's done for the football club over a number of years in a couple of stints. He is a great guy and a wonderful coach. We wish him well."

Both Ben Dawson and Graeme Jones remain on the staff at United going into the new season while Graeme Carrick has replaced Peter Ramage as Under-18 coach. Elliot Dickman will lead the Under-21s this term again.

Whether Howe makes a move to bring in his former goalie coach at Bournemouth Neil Moss remains to be seen. Howe brought his former Bournemouth staff members Jason Tindall, Simon Weatherstone and Stephen Purches with him last November but Smith remained in position after working under Sir Bobby Robson, Steve McClaren, Rafa Benitez and Steve Bruce.

Moss left Bournemouth in June 2021 at the same time as Purches and Weatherstone, and a year after Howe had departed the club.
