Newcastle United are assessing Jonjo Shelvey after the player was forced off after just 20 minutes of action at Estadio da Luz.
The former Liverpool midfielder came on as a half-time sub and was having an excellent game as he picked passes and set up chances for both Jacob Murphy and Chris Wood against Benfica.
But he was dealt an injury blow to his right leg after being fouled then falling awkwardly into the turf.
Boss Eddie Howe was advised by his medics to replace Shelvey immediately and brought on Matty Longstaff with 15 minutes to go.
Shelvey has been in great shape in pre-season and hobbled off the field holding his leg.
It may yet be a precautionary measure by Newcastle but Shelvey - who will get a new contract after three more matches - faces assessment after the trip to Portugal.
