Newcastle United are hoping to move Dwight Gayle to Middlesbrough after the striker was told to train with the club's Academy players.
The striker's representatives have been in discussions with Boro after Gayle learned he had no future at St James' Park under Eddie Howe, despite having two years left to run on his contract. Chronicle Live understands that the 32-year-old also has interest from other Championship clubs too but with his family settled in the North-East, Boro would be an appealing move.
Gayle played just 13 minutes of action under Howe and did not start a single Premier League game for the Toon boss during his early months as boss. Gayle will be moved on as the club plan to bring in a new forward.
Gayle was told to report to the club's Academy at Little Benton after learning he would not be among the players checking in for testing during pre-season. Boro would be landing a proven goalscorer in Gayle and his record at Newcastle is nothing to be sniffed at either after scoring 34 goals in 65 starts.
The striker was loaned to West Brom in 2018/19 where he scored 23 goals in 33 matches. His experience and know-how will be missed at Newcastle but the club aim to ensure that Callum Wilson and Chris Wood have sufficient back-up.
