Newcastle United news as key man teases injury return and Dan Burn looks to Man City

Here are the latest Newcastle United evening headlines on Tuesday, 3 May 2022.

Wilson’s fitness teaser

Callum Wilson has teased that is nearing a return to action for Newcastle United after several months on the sidelines.

The Magpies' top scorer has not played since hobbling off with a calf issue in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United back in December. It was originally thought that Wilson would be ruled out for a couple of months, but the striker's recovery took longer than he hoped.

Wilson has travelled to Dubai and London for specialist treatment and the number nine has been working hard with the club's sports science teams in recent weeks. Although Eddie Howe confirmed that Wilson had not yet joined in with group training last week, the Newcastle head coach added that the 30-year-old was 'edging closer'.

Burn on City

Dan Burn says that Newcastle United are looking at both Saturday's defeat to Liverpool and Sunday's clash with Manchester City as examinations of how far the Magpies have progressed in 2022.

A narrow loss to the Reds on Saturday saw Newcastle push Jurgen Klopp's side to the end without any rewards. Man City will go into Sunday on the back of a high octane Champions League semi-final away to Real Madrid.

And Burn and his team-mates are relishing the Super Sunday encounter at the Etihad Stadium, he said: "There is no shame in getting beat of Liverpool. "Them and City are probably the best two teams in the world at the moment so that's where we want to be so it was a bit of a measure to see how far away we are.”

Calvert-Lewin claim

Former Scotland international Frank McAvennie reckons Dominic Calvert-Lewin should opt to join Newcastle United over Champions League chasing Arsenal this summer should he leave Merseyside. The Everton striker has endured an injury hit campaign, scoring just three times in the Premier League this season.

Last season, the 25-year-old was one of the top scorers in the league, bagging himself 16 goals. With the Toffees in a relegation battle at the moment, Calvert-Lewin could be available at a cut rate price for a team willing to bank on this season being a one off. And McAvennie believes that Newcastle would prove to be a much more promising move for the England international over a move to North London.

"I’m not sure why you would go to Arsenal instead of Newcastle," McAvennie told Football Insider. "They won’t be far off each other soon and only one of those clubs is on the up in my opinion. I think he’s having a stinker if he goes to Arsenal, he has had such a bad season as well.”

Lingard’s brother

The brother of Jesse Lingard has hit out at Manchester United after he was not given a farewell in what could’ve been his last match in a red shirt at Old Trafford. Lingard was an unused substitute in the Red Devils’ 3-0 win over Brentford, which meant he was unable to receive a send off from supporters.

The likes of Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani, Nemanja Matic and Phil Jones – who have all been at the club for less time than Lingard – were all handed minutes on the pitch on Monday in order to receive an ovation from the Old Trafford crowd. Lingard is out of contract in the summer at Man United and it appears as apparent as ever that he won’t be extending his stay at the club, despite the arrival of Erik ten Hag as the new manager.
