Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is facing charges from the English Football Association (FA) for alleged misconduct related to breaches of the federation's betting rules. The FA has accused Tonali of violating FA Rule E8 by reportedly placing bets on football matches 50 times between August 12, 2023, and October 12, 2023.
The FA has given Tonali until April 5 to respond to the charges. This is not the first time Tonali has faced disciplinary action for betting-related issues. In October 2023, he received a 10-month suspension from football for betting on matches in Italy following an investigation by prosecutors in Turin.
Tonali, who transferred to Newcastle from AC Milan in July last year, has been at the center of controversy due to his alleged gambling activities. His agent, Giuseppe Riso, previously stated that Tonali struggles with a gambling addiction.
Newcastle released a statement acknowledging the charges against Tonali and expressed their continued support for the player. The club emphasized that Tonali is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigations.
Despite the off-field distractions, Tonali has managed to make 11 appearances for Newcastle in various competitions this season, scoring one goal along the way. The outcome of the FA's investigation will determine the potential consequences for Tonali and his future with the club.
