Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer delivers verdict on 'magnificent' Manchester City thriller

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer was captivated by the Magpies' incredible 3-3 draw against reigning Premier League champions Manchester City at St James' Park.

Ilkay Gundogan struck City into an early lead inside five minutes but Newcastle produced a sensational response to set-up an early contender for game of the season.

Miguel Almiron was initially flagged offside when he bundled home Alan Saint-Maximin's low cross but the goal was awarded after a lengthy VAR review. Callum Wilson consolidated Almiron's leveller by firing Newcastle into the lead before the break.

"GTFI man. Great goal @CallumWilson toon toon," Shearer shared in a tweet. He later added: "Now that was a bloody good first half! Get the ball to Saint Maxi he's giving Kyle Walker a torrid time!"

Newcastle continued to pose City problems after the break and Kieran Trippier curled an exquisite free-kick into the top corner to give the Magpies a two-goal cushion.

However, City mounted a comeback with goals from Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva denying Newcastle three points. Trippier was also shown a straight red card for a foul on Kevin de Bruyne in the last 15 minutes although the red card was overturned following a VAR review.

"Far too quick to show the red. At least common sense has been shown," Shearer tweeted in response to the Trippier incident.

On the match itself, Shearer said: "What a magnificent game that was. Well done to both sets of players. Great to watch."
