Newcastle United remain hopeful they can sign Jesse Lingard this summer, according to the Express, despite the midfielder holding talks with Tottenham and Everton. The 29-year-old is now a free agent after being released by Manchester United, with a host of Premier League sides keen on a deal.
Lingard has spoken to Spurs and Everton regarding a move but the Magpies remain in the race and are ready to convince the midfielder to join the project at St James’ Park according to the report. Newcastle initially made a move for the former West Ham man in January but their approaches were blocked by Manchester United's astronomical loan fee demands, only for Lingard to make just two starts across the remainder of the campaign.
West Ham are keen to bring Lingard back to the club after an impressive loan spell during the 2020/2021 campaign, but if reports are to be believed, Eddie Howe’s side are confident they can convince the midfielder by offering bigger wages and selling their exciting project. The midfielder scored nine goals in 16 games during the second half of West Ham’s 2020/2021 campaign, but Manchester United failed to let Lingard leave again despite his lack of minutes.

Lingard will be desperate for regular football in the slim hope he can make a late break into Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar later this year. His performances under David Moyes earned a recall in August 2021 and a strong start to the 2022/2023 season could tempt the Three Lions' boss to add him into the expanded 26-man squad.
The addition of a proven Premier League talent could well be a shrewd move for the Magpies, who worked intelligently last year to bolster the squad with players who understand the league alongside big-money signings from Europe. Sporting director Dan Ashworth has already secured a £30million deal for Lille defender Sven Botman, while the club are still working on a deal for Hugo Ekitike. The addition of Lingard would fit the brief at St James’ Park by adding Premier League experience to those elite European talents.
