Newcastle United insider makes Sam Allardyce prediction as Leeds United sent weakness warning

It’s been a season to remember on Tyneside but after last week’s defeat to Arsenal, what is Newcastle’s mindset like leading into this one?

Speaking to some of the players this week, I don't get any sense of panic from the Newcastle squad with the Arsenal defeat unlucky more than anything else. They certainly created chances but didn't get the rub of the green, twice hitting the post and running into an in form Aaron Ramsdale.

So it will be a case of them repeating a similar type of performance at Elland Road. They are so close to the Champions League they can almost reach out and touch it.

It's probably going to be two wins from four matches needed. So even if they don't beat Leeds, they can still do it in home matches vs Brighton and Leicester.

Newcastle will be determined and focused on Saturday and I think they will revel in the opportunity to be first up on Saturday lunchtime rather than waiting for another Super Sunday slot.

How are the fans coping with the run in? Is there confidence that Newcastle will get the job done and qualify for the Champions League or are nerves beginning to set in?

I don't think there is anything like the type of nerves we've seen in the past when it comes to relegation battles or even when the club used to challenge for the title. After sitting out of Europe for more than 10 years, most fans I speak to are just happy to see them back in Continental competition, the Champions League is a major bonus.

Had you asked most Newcastle followers if they'd have taken even a Europa Conference League place last August, they'd have snapped that up instantly. True, the money and prestige of Champions League is important.

But whether they do it with a couple of games to spare or stumble over the line, there will be a huge party on Tyneside.

What is the perception on Tyneside of Leeds from afar this season?

I just think you can never write them off. For all their struggles this season, they have pulled out some big results.

Winning at Liverpool for example or going to a tough venue like Molineux and getting a big win. Without seeing Leeds regularly it's always hard to put a finger on exactly what the issue is.

But I know they will be up for it against Newcastle, it's crunch time, Big Sam will have them fired up and Elland Road is a tough environment for teams at the best of times.

Some of the defeats Leeds have had have been alarming so there's cracks to expose perhaps. But at Man City last week, they won the second half.

Knowing Big Sam he will be looking to build on that.

How do you feel Leeds can open Newcastle up this weekend? What is the Magpies’ biggest weakness?

In all truth, there aren't many weaknesses. Defensively they are solid.

Leeds' best chance may be to try to look for some end of season tiredness in the Toon ranks. But after a week of rest and glorious weather up here, the players should be refreshed.

If Newcastle don't take their chances like last weekend, that might keep Leeds in the game and then they can strike late on. But if Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak are in the mood that will make it tough.

Elland Road promises to be a cauldron on Saturday afternoon given there’s so much riding on the game. How will Newcastle handle such an intimidating atmosphere?

You'd stop short at saying it's a local derby but it's as close as you can get. Last season I think Newcastle players used the intimidating atmosphere as fuel to get them a result.

Make no mistake it was one of the cornerstones for survival. After that game, Newcastle players stayed out longer than usual to soak up the scenes of celebration.

I think they will use last season's experience to their advantage. It won't be for the faint-hearted though.

You’ll obviously know plenty about Sam Allardyce and his way of playing. Do you think he can keep Leeds in the Premier League?

Big Sam won't care how Leeds do it, he will just look to get the results needed. I think he might look at it and think a draw and a win from three games would do it.

It won't be pretty, there will be lots of breaking teams down. I think he can do it, but only just and I think it might be at Nottingham Forest and Leicester's expense.
