Newcastle United hire ex-Liverpool backroom staff member part of Rafa Benitez Istanbul team

A former Liverpool physio has joined Newcastle United.

Dave Galley, who was most recently working with League One club Plymouth Argyle, has left to complete a move to St James’ Park.

He has already got straight to work at Newcastle and was part of their backroom team for the win over Aston Villa on Sunday in the Premier League.

Galley spent six years as a physio at Liverpool between 1999 and 2005, initially arriving when Gerard Houllier was in charge of the club.

Galley left the Reds soon after Rafa Benitez guided the club to its fifth European Cup triumph in Istanbul.

The 59-year-old would have spells at Derby County, Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic, before he returned to Liverpool in 2009.

Galley would spend just one year back on Merseyside before he left the club again the summer of 2010, around the same time as Benitez was dismissed as manager.

Further spells as a physio at Sunderland, Nottingham Forest and UAE-based club Al-Ain would follow for Galley, before moving to Plymouth in 2019.

And after nearly three years in the south west, he has relocated back to the north and will work as a physio at Newcastle.

Galley has also worked with the England Under-21 team as a physio earlier in his career.
