Newcastle United headlines: Eddie Howe on result and red card as Garang Kuol makes away end appearence

Your Newcastle United headlines for Saturday, October 1.

‘Long time coming’ - Howe

Eddie Howe was relieved to finally get his second win of the campaign after the 4-1 win against Fulham. Newcastle’s pre-match points tally did not reflect the level of performances witnessed so far this season.

Bournemouth and possibly Brighton aside, the Magpies have impressed in every game but only had one win on the board. However, that all changed with a commanding victory in West London.

Howe confessed the much-needed three points were long overdue. "It has been a long time coming,” he said. “We have had a long wait for the second win of the season. Right from the start we had a good feeling, with good energy, and created chances early on.

“Obviously, the red card made it easier but I am very pleased with the players' response. Their attitude - we wanted more, we weren't happy with what we had, always trying to score.”

Howe on red card

The Magpies’ boss has admitted he feared for Sean Longstaff after Nathaniel Chalobah’s reckless challenge on eight minutes. Referee Darren England was summoned to the monitor to overturn his yellow card decision and force Fulham to continue with 10 men.

That swung the balance firmly in Newcastle’s favour and, speaking post-match, Howe called Longstaff “lucky” to carry on. The 44-year-old said: “I haven’t seen it again, but my initial feeling was, ‘Ooh, that’s high’. Whenever there’s height and force, the player’s safety is in danger.

“I thought Sean was lucky to get up from that one. I think the referee had a similar view – hence why he gave the red card.”

Kuol with away fans

Newcastle new boy Garang Kuol did not take long to endear himself to supporters by turning up in the Craven Cottage away end. Just days after finalising a move to St James’ Park, the Australian international cheered his teammates on from the terraces.

Kuol will officially sign for the Magpies in January before being loaned back to Central Coast Mariners. An international debut last weekend means the 18-year-old could feature at next month’s World Cup in Qatar.

Eagle-eyed Toon fans were quick to spot their latest signing and he happily posed for snaps in the away end. Could a win today - with Kuol in attendance - be an omen of what is to come?
