Newcastle United headlines: Eddie Howe and Jamaal Lascelles reflection as Manchester City record win

Your Newcastle United headlines for Saturday, March 4.

Match report

Newcastle United's hopes of a Champions League place were dented at the Etihad Stadium after goals from Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva.

The game seemed to swing on a substitution from Pep Guardiola after he introduced Silva mid-way through the second half - just at a time when Eddie Howe had thrown three subs on in Alexander Isak, Joe Willock and Allan Saint-Maximin to rattle City. And that seemed to be the difference in an intense clash.

United were left to rue missed chances in both halves as Manchester City inflicted defeat and extended their win-less top-flight sequence to a 19th match in these parts. The game could have been different had Newcastle not wasted some excellent chances in the first half and after the break.

Howe reflects after defeat

Eddie Howe believes his side gave it a good account of themselves against Manchester City. The boss boss did, however, admit Newcastle were missing that final product in the box.

Speaking after the loss at the Etihad Stadium, Howe said: "I thought we were well in the game today. "It was a similar performance to last week where we were good in the game, very dynamic in our play, aggressive, good with the ball, hurt them at times but couldn't put that final piece together.

"Our plan was to come here and attack and to try and give our all physically and then give an opportunity to new players coming onto the pitch to do the same.

"Keeping that high energy up for 90 minutes is difficult so we wanted to break that up with the substitutions. "I was pleased with the impact but then the second goal comes at a bad time for us. It could have been different, there were moments for us today.

"Probably the one that sticks in my head is Joelinton's chance at 1-0. They're big moments and when you play games like this you have to be clinical because you're not going to get many chances. Unfortunately. that didn't happen."

Lascelles on defeat

Jamaal Lascelles felt that Newcastle United at least showed they were prepared to go "toe to toe" with the Premier League champions Manchester City.

Lascelles came in from the cold for his first start since the 2-1 defeat away to Liverpool way back in August and the centre-back did well enough against Erling Haaland, with the man who has scored 33 goals this season in all competitions unable to add to his tally.

The Newcastle defender said: "We made it difficult. On a different day, you don't know. We had chances to be fair. I think we have come a long way but to go toe to toe with them and play so high up the pitch here there are positives to take. Not many teams will come here and go on the front-foot and have a high press on the halfway line.

"I think we did that today. A couple of times we nearly nicked it. It just goes to show the way the manager wants to play. On the front-foot no matter who we face. We are disappointed not to get anything."

Joelinton faces ban

Newcastle United have inevitably hit with a two-match Premier League ban for Joelinton.

The Brazilian collected a yellow card on 53 minutes in the clash against Man City today at the Etihad Stadium to take him to 10 yellow cards for the season. This resulted in a two match suspension which will be immediately served against Wolves next Sunday then Nottingham Forest away.

Joelinton entered the book after a foul on Rodri at the start of the second half meaning Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson come back into contention for the next couple of games. Joelinton was always going to be up against it and went into today's game needing to avoid a yellow card for the next nine matches.
