Newcastle United headlines: Chris Wood injury, infamous bust-up revisited and Sven Botman 'loyalty'

Your Newcastle United headlines for Sunday, September 25.

Another injury blow

Eddie Howe’s injury woes went from bad to worse after Chris Wood hobbled off against Australia. Newcastle have already seen Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes miss international fixtures ahead of their return to Tyneside.

The treatment table is clogged up at St James’ Park, with Allan Saint-Maximin, Jonjo Shelvey and Callum Wilson absent in recent times. If the latter is still ruled out this weekend, Newcastle could have no fit first-team striker for the Fulham clash.

Speaking post-match, Wood confirmed he suffered a rib injury following a collision. The striker told Newshub Sport: “I went in for a collision and something popped in my rib. It hurt to run and breathe so I had to come off.”

Jenas on Dyer/Bowyer fight

Almost two decades on, Jermaine Jenas has opened up about the infamous on-field bust-up between Kieran Dyer and Lee Bowyer. Newcastle faced Aston Villa in April 2005 and finished the game with eight men as both players - and Steven Taylor - were comically dismissed.

The game made the Magpies a laughing stock and Jenas attributes the row to a “fiery” dressing room. He told William Hill: “I’d never experienced anything like that. The maddest thing about the whole thing was that every single morning we’d have round tables in our canteen and you’d have breakfast and lunch together.

“It was just a moment of madness, to be honest. But our dressing room was fiery like that. At half-time, if things weren’t going well, it wasn’t like ‘let’s see what the manager has to say’, instead you’d have a player in your face telling you to sort yourself out.

“For Kieron, it was a real shame because it’s what he’s known for. Honestly, when he was on, he was one of the best players I ever played with.”

Botman ‘loyalty’

ChronicleLive columnist Lee Clark believes Sven Botman has shown “fantastic loyalty” to Newcastle. The Dutchman rejected the chance to represent their under-21 setup to focus on breaking into Howe’s side.

So far, Botman is yet to cement himself as a first-team regular, starting just four of the opening seven games. Dan Burn was given the nod against Bournemouth, with the £32million man an unused substitute.

Former Toon and Sunderland midfielder Clark respects Botman’s decision to stay put. "For one, it shows fantastic loyalty to Newcastle,” he told ChronicleLive. “It tells me the player has got a brilliant attitude and mentality. He's not sulking, he's not playing the blame game or saying it's down to other people.

"I don't think he's been left out of the team for his performances in any way. I think it's the quality of the squad Eddie has brought together. The players who have come in, none of those new signings have been a negative.”
