Newcastle United headlines as Lady Magpies make FA Cup history at St James' Park with Barnsley win

Here are your Newcastle United evening headlines on Sunday, 27 November.

Record breaking crowd watch Lady Magpies make history in 2-1 FA Cup win over Barnsley Women

Newcastle United Women sealed a sensational comeback win in front of a record St James' Park crowd. The Lady Magpies booked their place in the FA Cup third round in front of 28,565 fans with a 2-1 win over Barnsley - an FA Cup record crowd outside of a final.

Emily Pierrepont put the visitors in front after only 15 minutes, but long-range stunners from Georgia Gibson and Sharna Wilkinson turned the tie around in the space of five second-half minutes.

It was a fitting finale for Becky Langley's side in their second St James' Park outing of the year, which shattered the attendance record set in the comfortable win over Alnwick Town Ladies in May.

Why Alan Shearer feels Callum Wilson could start for England ahead of Harry Kane vs Wales

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has called for England manager Gareth Southgate to hand Magpies striker Callum Wilson a start in England's final World Cup group stage match against Wales on Tuesday evening.

The Three Lions got their tournament off to a perfect start with a 6-2 thumping of Iran before stumbling to a 0-0 draw against the USA on Friday night with little attacking threat shown.

It also means that star striker and captain Harry Kane is yet to score in Qatar and the 29-year-old could well be feeling the effects of an ankle injury suffered against Iran more than is being let on.

"Harry Kane came through that scare about his ankle before the US game but, after playing a big part in an impressive team performance in the Iran game with two assists, he looked very tired and very leggy to me," explained Shearer.

"It might be time to think about getting him right for the knockout stages, and I have a sneaky feeling Callum Wilson might come in to face Wales on Tuesday instead."

BBC pundit says what Newcastle United supporters are thinking regarding Callum Wilson

Former Everton and Wales defender Ashley Williams is puzzled at Callum Wilson’s lack of game time for England. An impressive 15-minute cameo in the opening game against Iran saw the Newcastle United striker grab an assist for Jack Grealish.

However, the Toon striker watched from the sidelines as England slumped to a 0-0 draw with the United States. Despite pre-match injury fears, captain Harry Kane played the entire 90 minutes as the Three Lions looked toothless in attack.

"I’m pretty sure Callum Wilson is sitting there tonight watching the game thinking ‘when am I going to see any minutes of this World Cup?'," said BBC Sport's Ashley Williams.

"We know Harry Kane is one of the best strikers in the world, without a doubt. But it was not his best game and he did look fatigued. In the context of the 90 minutes, I think it probably is a good point for England."
