Newcastle United headlines amid Bruno Guimaraes award, Matt Targett warning and Supermac positivity

Your Newcastle United headlines for Saturday, May 7.

Bruno wins POTM

Bruno Guimaraes has won Newcastle United’s Player of the Month award for April. A stellar month saw the Brazilian bag three goals, make one assist and put in a man-of-the-match showing against Wolves to cement his status as the new cult hero on Tyneside.

As well as the Magpies’ in-house honour, Guimaraes is also competing for the Premier League’s Player of the Month - highlighting how impressive his performances have been. The 24-year-old is up against heavyweights Cristiano Ronaldo, Kevin De Bruyne and Heung-min Son. To vote for Guimaraes, click here.

Targett warning to teammates

Matt Targett is wary of Manchester City after the champions were knocked out of the Champions League in midweek. A dramatic exit to Real Madrid leaves the Premier League as the last piece of silverware Pep Guardiola can win this season.

City lead Liverpool by just one point despite being 14-points clear of the Reds in January. The pressure is mounted on the star-studded outfit to react against Newcastle and Targett knows the Magpies will be facing a wounded animal.

“They’ll be hurting for sure because over the two legs I think they've done more than enough to get through to the final,” he told the BBC Football Daily podcast. “They’ll be hurting a lot but they can't dwell on that as they know because they pretty much need to win every game to win the league because Liverpool are right on their tails. It’s going to be a good run-in and it‘ll be interesting to see what happens.”

Supermac’s positivity

ChronicleLive columnist and Newcastle legend Malcolm Macdonald thinks now is the best time to face Man City after their European exit. While the legendary former number nine admitted he does not know which Guardiola side will turn up on Sunday, the jitters suffered from the midweek humiliation gives United a chance.

Supermac also gave his thoughts on Allan Saint-Maximin’s controversial interview with the French outlet So Foot. Eddie Howe claimed the winger’s comments - where he appeared to take aim at his teammates - were taken out of context.
