Newcastle United forward Chris Wood insists he still wants 'more' after New Zealand's goal record

Newcastle United forward Chris Wood has insisted he still wants more after becoming New Zealand's all time leading goalscorer. The Magpies forward found the net twice in his countries 4-0 win over Fiji, now topping the All Whites' charts with 30 goals.

New Zealand where comfortable winners in Qatar yesterday evening, as they safely booked their place in the semi finals of the FIFA World Cup Oceania Qualifiers. Wood, opened the scoring late in the first half, before three second half strikes from Elijah Just, Wood once more and Clayton Lewis completed the rout.

Speaking out following the game, the United was overjoyed at finally toppling the charts, overtaking previous record holder Vaughan Coveny. But the 30-year-old insists he is not done yet, with the Newcastle man's ambitions clear for all to see.

“It means a lot. It’s been sought after for a very long time,” Wood said following his sides victory. “I dreamed as a kid trying to get to it, so to break it is fantastic and hopefully I can add a few more goals across the course of my career.

“To be fair it’s only in the last few windows that it started to get closer. It’s more hopeful that it can be done sooner rather than later, so it’s nice to have it ticked off. It’s something that I’ll be able to look back on when I finish my career but there’s still a lot more I want to achieve.”

Claiming the goalscoring accolade after a mere 62 appearances for his country, Wood has seen a superb footballing rise since his debut back in June 2009. Since then, the former Burnley man has firmly established himself here in the Premier League as one of New Zealand's finest footballing exports.
