Newcastle United focused on 'here and now' but homegrown star reveals exciting PIF 'end goal'

Sean Longstaff insists the 'end goal' for Newcastle United's new owners has to be competing in the Champions League within the next decade. The academy graduate was asked about the Magpies's long-term ambitions almost a year on from the takeover which has transformed the club's expectations.

Eddie Howe led Newcastle to Premier League survival, and has been backed by more than £200 million in this year's transfer windows. The deal for Alexander Isak shattered the club's record, while stars such as Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier have made sensational starts to life at St James' Park.

Newcastle's form in the second-half of last season along with this sizeable investment has led many to question how far Howe's side can go this campaign. Longstaff is adamant the club's rebuild will not happen 'overnight', but is confident the owners' ambitions will see the club return to Europe's elite competition in the coming years.

Longstaff told Sky Sports: "I think with the infrastructure being put in place and the backing the owners are going to give the club, there's no reason why they can't go and challenge at the very top of all of the competitions that they enter. The end goal is they're going to want to get into the Champions League, and play in the big competitions.

"I think that's where the club should be aiming, but for us it's about focusing on the here and now, and making sure the club is building in a sustainable and the right way. It's not just going to happen overnight, everyone knows that. But in five or ten years' time, it's going to be a really special football club to be involved with."
