It might not have been the result we had hoped for, but Newcastle United supporters remained proud of their team on Sunday.
The Magpies lost 2-0 to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final. But as the final whistle blew, it was clear the result didn’t matter to fans.
Because the incredible experience, the mass gathering at Trafalgar Square, the phenomenal Wor Flags display at Wembley, and many other highlights from this weekend were things fans could only dream of this time last year.

As the game kicked off Newcastle United supporters created one of the best atmospheres the new Wembley has ever seen before their Carabao Cup final kicked-off as the national stadium was turned black and white.
There were cheers, hugs and chants as the final whistle blew. Everyone filled with pride for how Newcastle has performed this season.
Speaking after the match, Anna Greenuk, and Liam Forster, both 22, headed back to Trafalgar where Newcastle Supporters were already showing their support for their team. Liam said: “Newcastle made it to a final and if you listen to that [fans chanting], that’s support.
“When the final whistle went I don’t think I heard a single person saying we hadn’t played well. A year ago we were fighting relegation, now look at us.”
Anna added: “We still did good and we had a goal keeper who hadn’t played for ages.”
Phil and Jaxon Gallon, who have travelled to London from Jersey to watch the match, also praised their team and the fans.
Speaking about the result Phil, 67, said: “I was confident even when we were 1-0. But as they say always the bridesmaid never the bride. It has been a gracious defeat and fantastic support.
“It’s an experience Newcastle United fans have been waiting for for a long time.”
He added: “I have no qualms whatsoever. It’s been a great day out and I’m sure there will be better days ahead.”
His son Jaxon, 20, added: “I’m buzzing. I couldn’t care less about the result.”
The importance of the final was reflected in the number of Toon Army supporters who felt propelled to take the trip to London this weekend, regardless of whether they had a ticket.
Billy, Amy, Will and Tyler Griffiths got into London at 5.50am after boarding a bus to the capital on Saturday night and we’re heading back the same day. They hadn’t slept but emphasised how important it was for the family to be in London. Will, 18, said: “Me and Tyler (15) have never experienced this in our lifetimes.”
Amy added: “It’s great for the kids to experience something like this.” Billy added: “I’ve been involved in grassroots football for over 25 years. We’re a very passionate family about football and always have been.”
