Newcastle United fans are delighted after Chris Wood netted his first goal in black-and-white against Southampton. The New Zealand international made the breakthrough in his eight appearance with the equaliser at St Mary's Stadium on Thursday night.
Eddie Howe insists he was not concerned about the January signing's lack of goals so far, and told reporters in his pre-match press conference that the 30-year-old had been 'outstanding' in his performances so far. However, the lack of goals had led some pundits to question his contribution to the Magpies' recent unbeaten run.
Wood started once again for the clash with Ralph Hassenhuttl's side, with the only change coming with Bruno Guimaraes making his first start in place of the injured Joelinton. The visitors made a confident start, but it was the hosts who took the lead through a deflected header from Stuart Armstrong.

Newcastle hit back just seven minutes later, with Jonjo Shelvey delivering a delightful cross from deep to take Mohammed Salisu out of the game. It left Wood with a free header, and the former Burnley striker made no mistake to guide the header past former Magpie Fraser Forster.
Here is what Newcastle United fans had to say following Wood's equaliser against the Saints:
'Classic Chris Wood'
'Deserved that'
'First of many'
'Over the moon'
'So happy for him'
'Well deserved'
