Here are the latest Newcastle United headlines for Monday, June 12, 2023.
Minteh deal done
Newcastle United have completed the signing of youngster Yankuba Minteh from Danish side Odense.
The 18-year-old Gambian winger arrives on Tyneside after 17 senior appearances for Odense, six goals and four assists having been tracked since the club's takeover and Academy shake-up. But he will be immediately loaned out to Feyenoord in Holland.
A United statement confirming the exciting deal read: "United have completed a deal to sign 18-year-old Gambia forward Yankuba Minteh from Danish side Odense Boldklub (OB), subject to approval.
"The promising attacker will officially complete his move to the Magpies on 1st July 2023 before immediately joining Dutch champions and fellow UEFA Champions League competitors Feyenoord on loan for the 2023/24 season.
"A highly coveted prospect, Minteh has already made 17 senior appearances for OB in the Danish Superliga, scoring four goals and registering six assists."
James Maddison future
Newcastle United transfer target James Maddison is expected to move a step closer to leaving Leicester City this week - but the Foxes are expected to drive a hard bargain despite the 26-year-old having just a year left on his current deal.
The Magpies have continuously tracked developments surrounding the England international since a huge £50million offer was submitted last summer. Back then the deal fell through when talks with his representatives on personal terms coincided with Newcastle switching attentions elsewhere in the remainder of the summer window.
Maddison is not against a move to United but has left discussions with his agency CAA Base in the early weeks of summer as he rests and recuperates and comes to terms with the relegation of the club he will always feel indebted to in Leicester. There is firm interest from Tottenham Hotspur too with Ange Postecoglou already notifying Daniel Levy the ex-Norwich player is on his wish list.
One of the factors to come into Maddison's price tag is the 15 per cent sell-on clause to his old club Norwich.
Wenger backs investment
Arsene Wenger does not want to stop 'big investors' pumping money into the game - even if there is a 'control' on what Newcastle United's owners can spend because of Financial Fair Play (FFP).
Newcastle have splurged more than £250m in transfer fees since the takeover in October, 2021. Although this is a noteworthy sum, Newcastle have not behaved like the so-called 'richest club in the world' because of FFP regulations, which prevent clubs spending more than they earn.
Wenger, who is FIFA's chief of global football development said: "At least, today, you have a control. You have a control because Financial Fair Play exists. When we faced Chelsea at the time, there was no control at all.
"I believe there are two ingredients that are very important. You want the players to be well paid because you want the players to be rewarded. Also, you want the big investors to invest in football and you do not want to stop them investing.
"What I would like, too, is that they guarantee what they promise. That's the most important for me. You cannot stop people from investing into the game."
Lewis Miley hint
Newcastle United could resist loan bids for exciting teenager Lewis Miley this summer - with Eddie Howe delighted with his development so far.
Miley came on for his Premier League debut to become the club's youngest ever player at 17 in the competition and clipped the crossbar within minutes of his arrival during the 1-1 draw against Chelsea. Miley admits the cameo at Stamford Bridge has given him the taste for more.
Howe pulled Elliot Anderson back from a loan move last summer and he was eventually rewarded with 27 first-team appearances. The head coach admits Miley is slightly behind in terms of experience compared to Anderson but hinted he will stay at United next term.
He said: "Lewis, I'd say, is a bit behind that (Anderson). He's just turned 17 so I don't want to play too much expectation on him but he is someone we believe in. I certainly hope he is in and around training with us regularly next season."
Given there will be Champions League action and opportunities in both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup next season, as well as the Papa John's Trophy with the Under-21s, Miley could add to his CV next term without going out on loan.
