Newcastle United evening headlines with Conte confession, Botman interview and Lloris 'homework'

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has paid tribute to Newcastle United in his verdict on the defeat to the Magpies. Elsewhere, Sven Botman believes each of his team-mates deserve praise for the club's impressive defensive record so far this campaign.

Here are your Newcastle United headlines for October 24.

Conte confession

Antonio Conte admits that Tottenham Hotspur's chance to beat Newcastle United came and went - but the Italian paid tribute to the Magpies albeit through gritted teeth.

Newcastle brought Spurs' 100% record to an end after seven straight wins at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. And as the final whistle sounded the Toon Army partied at the swanky London venue.

Conte said: "Before the situation the first goal we created many chances to score. Maybe if we had better finishing we could score."

Botman verdict

Sven Botman has played down praise of Newcastle United's impressive defensive record this season - and insists that every player should be getting credit for the Toon's displays.

Much has been made about pictures of the back four of Botman, Fabian Schar, Kieran Trippier and Dan Ban celebrating wins of late, but the ex-Ajax youngster does not want only the defenders to take the glory.

The Dutchman is - remarkably - yet to taste defeat in a Newcastle shirt following his £34million move from Lille in the summer. But he was quick to credit his team-mates after the win at Spurs.

Lloris 'homework'

Newcastle United worked hard on exposing the space on offer at Tottenham's swanky stadium in the capital by watching over video clips at their Benton base last week.

And it was that attention to detail that led to the opening goal for Callum Wilson as Fabian Schar lured the experienced Hugo Lloris off his line. A long pass from Schar saw Lloris rush out before Wilson picked up the pieces to score a hotly disputed goal.

After the game Wilson said: "The ball has been played in behind for my goal and the goalie, we did our homework, we knew would rush off his line. He has chested it and dived into me. I don't feel I need to move. I have turned and finished and it has helped us get three points."

Shelvey update

Jonjo Shelvey was in unbelievable shape during Newcastle United's pre-season tours of Austria and Portugal. And then disaster struck as he chased a ball amid the illustrious backdrop of the Estádio da Luz against Benfica.

Undeterred and a handful of games away from triggering a new contract extension, Shelvey got his head down and worked throughout late summer to ensure he was available for selection as soon as possible.

The weather was slightly different to that humid night in Lisbon in pre-season when Shelvey made his return to action in the capital against Spurs. The rain was tipping down and the London skies had endured thunder and lightning as Shelvey came on the final throes of the game.

Shelvey had been summoned a lot earlier by Eddie Howe and it had at one point looked like he would get 10 minutes or so to regain that magical feeling of stepping on to the Premier League stage. But in the end the few minutes he got in stoppage, without getting a touch of the ball, will mean the world to him.

What the Sky Sports cameras did not see was the rigorous workout Shelvey put in with the fitness staff at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as fans made their way home. Shelvey was put through his paces and weather aside it was a reminder of how hard the 30-year-old worked in pre-season.

Wilson Qatar vow

Callum Wilson has been dreaming of the 2022 World Cup for a long time and may well be playing himself into contention for the winter showpiece thanks to his recent Newcastle United exploits. The striker visited the Gulf state back in 2017 while recovering from a cruciate knee ligament injury and it was there he first vowed to make sure his return to the country would be for more positive reasons.

Undergoing a three-week treatment plan at Aspetar, one of the leading sports medicine hospitals in Doha, Wilson developed his first taste of the country and what he could expect if returning with England in five years time. “I hope I can return to Qatar in a more active fashion to represent England in 2022," he told Sport360 at the time.

Fast forward to present day and with the tournament just weeks away, Wilson is back in contention for a place in Gareth Southgate 's 26-man tournament squad. Sunday saw the former Bournemouth man find the back of the net once again in Newcastle 's 2-1 win over Tottenham in the capital, ending an unusually long three-game dry spell since coming back from injury earlier this month.

Souness warning

TalkSPORT pundit Graeme Souness has warned his former club Liverpool, as well as Chelsea, about Newcastle United's top four potential after their 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur yesterday.

Goals from Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron were enough to secure all three points for the Magpies, sending them into the top four above both the Reds and the Blues.

Souness made 347 appearances for Liverpool across seven years, scoring 54 goals and providing 23 assists, but now believes Newcastle could replace either Chelsea or Liverpool in the established top six at the end of the season.
