But he also believes that success at Newcastle is also on the cards - providing United stay patient. A top 10 aim is the initial target this term but Bruno has bigger ambitions further down the line. Newcastle United 0-1 Mainz report as Magpies fall to first pre-season defeat in Austria
Newcastle United were beaten 1-0 by Bundesliga side Mainz 05 in baking conditions in the shadow of the Alps. The game ended in chaotic manner as a pitch invasion saw masses of fans try to get shirts and selfies from Newcastle stars.
Eddie Howe could only watch on as chances came and went for Newcastle and a single second half goal for the German side was enough to claim a pre-season victory.
Howe's side rounded off their mini tour of Austria in Kufstein against the Bundesliga side that finished eighth last term. The opening 10 minutes resulted in Newcastle trying to work an opening but Mainz 05 were well drilled and made it tough for the Magpies to find space.
Eddie Howe confirms who will be club captain at Newcastle United next season and why
Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles has been given the green light to start the new season as captain at St James' Park.
Much has been made of the possibility of Lascelles not starting the campaign with £34million Sven Botman through the door and Fabian Schar one of the favourites to start against Nottingham Forest. But Howe has underlined the presence of Lascelles and indicated he does not need to change skipper, despite having the option of England right-back Kieran Trippier - who took the armband against 1860 Munich in the second half.
When asked about Lascelles' position, Eddie Howe, when asked who will lead the team if the long serving captain is missing, said: "It's a difficult question to ask, Jamaal is our captain. He led the team really well last season."
Eddie Howe explains why he is keeping Federico Fernandez on board at Newcastle United
Eddie Howe has insisted that former Napoli defender Federico Fernandez still has a part to play at Newcastle United.
Fernandez is yet to feature in pre-season after picking up an injury and last played in the Premier League back in December when Howe won his first game in charge of the Magpies in a narrow 1-0 win over Burnley. The centre-back didn't train with the main group during an intense training session in Saalfelden amid scorching conditions.
When asked about 33-year-old Fernandez's status, Howe, speaking in a Press briefing in Austria, said: "Fede has picked up a minimal calf injury. It’s tight but we’re taking it carefully to build him back up before he trains."
