A look at the latest Newcastle United headlines on Monday, April 25.
Jurgen Klopp makes 'brutal' Newcastle admission after Liverpool's Premier League appeal failed
Jurgen Klopp has admitted that it will be 'brutal' for Liverpool to face Newcastle United on Saturday even if the title chasers will 'enjoy' an intense run of fixtures after failing to get the game put back.
Liverpool play Villarreal in the first-leg of their Champions League semi-final tie on Tuesday night before travelling to St James' Park to take on Eddie Howe's resurgent side four days later. Liverpool had wanted more recovery time and further hours to prepare for the game on Tyneside and Klopp even previously went as far as to say that 'if you want to cause us problems, you send us to 12.30 at Newcastle'.
However, the game will still go ahead at 12.30pm after the Premier League rejected the Reds' appeal to move it to a later time. It will be the ninth game Liverpool have played this month as Klopp attempts to win a historic quadruple.
Bruno Guimaraes' influence leads to exciting Newcastle change as Liverpool set for nasty welcome
Newcastle United supporters had to wait a long time to witness a Premier League win at Carrow Road, but you suspect the 400-mile round trip was worth it. It was Newcastle's biggest Premier League win since 2020 and the 3-0 victory marked the first time the Magpies had won four top-flight fixtures in a row since 2018 as Howe's side moved up to ninth place in the table.
The away end were able to relax in the second half for one of the few times this season as they repeatedly urged their side to 'take the p---' and greeted completed passes with shouts of 'ole!'.
It is easy to forget that Newcastle had made a sluggish start but when Howe's side moved through the gears and produced their best move of the game, tellingly, the visitors took Norwich apart in the 37th minute. Sean Longstaff's ball over the top picked out Jacob Murphy down the right and the winger played a clever one-two with Emil Krafth before passing to Allan Saint-Maximin inside the area. Saint-Maximin, under pressure, attempted to square it to the unmarked Longstaff but the ball eventually fell to Joelinton, who lashed it into the net.
UK Government to introduce independent football regulator after fan-led review
The £300million Saudi-backed takeover of Newcastle United might be the last of its kind after the UK Government backed an independent regulator for English football. A fan-led review chaired by former sports minister Tracey Crouch had been ongoing since the fallout of the European Super League last year.
Other areas of scrutiny include club ownership following the collapse of Bury and Derby County’s well-documented financial difficulties. At the other end of the scale, moral questions regarding the new regime at St James’ Park surfaced upon completion of the deal in October. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s alleged ties with Vladimir Putin also heightened calls to enforce a more rigorous owners’ and directors’ test.
A new regulator - expected to be in place by 2024 - will apply an ‘enhanced’ test to analyse whether potential owners are of a certain level of integrity.
Newcastle United fans vent anger at Jamie Carragher after Everton ‘bigger club’ claim
Newcastle United fans were fuming on social media after Jamie Carragher claimed Everton were a bigger club. Following the Toffees’ 2-0 loss to rivals Liverpool, the former Reds defender - who was a boyhood Toffees fan - boldly suggested Everton could become the biggest club to be relegated from the Premier League.
The defeat leaves Frank Lampard’s men two points adrift because Burnley earned a 1-0 win against Wolves hours earlier. A daunting run of fixtures continues as Everton take on Chelsea next - making relegation for the first time since 1951 a real possibility.
If the Toffees do drop to the Championship, Carragher believes the event would be unprecedented and struggled to think of a comparison in the modern era. He said: “I think if Everton go down, Everton will become a template for every other owner and club in the Premier League of how not to do it.
Danny Murphy says Jordan Pickford should join Newcastle if Everton get relegated
Former Fulham and Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy claims Jordan Pickford should join Newcastle if Everton are relegated at the end of the current season. Currently England's number one, Pickford has been warned his place in the World Cup squad for Qatar could be at risk if he stays with the Toffees in the Championship.
Frank Lampard's side were dragged into the bottom three over the course of the weekend but still have a game in hand on Burnley. Pickford came through the academy at Newcastle's arch-rivals Sunderland and has been happy to play the pantomime villain in clashes between his current side and the Magpies.
Of course, plenty have cross the black and white and red and white divide throughout history. With Newcastle expected to bring in a goalkeeper this summer to provide competition for Martin Dubravka, Murphy believes Pickford could be an option if Everton are relegated.
